Amost a Millionaire

“No man can tell whether he is rich or poor by turning to his ledger. It is the heart that makes a man rich. He is rich or poor according to what he is, not according to what he has.”—Henry Ward Beecher

The lottery jackpot had been thirty million dollars. I checked my numbers in the morning. Nope. I hadn’t won it.

At lunch that afternoon, I sat next to my friend, Dori Jackson. A wonderful, creative art teacher, she always had the ability to make me laugh. She showed me the winning numbers:

4 9 16 32 33 46

Then she showed me her ticket with the numbers she had picked:

4 9 16 32 33 47

Clutching each other’s arms, we wailed together. So close!

But Dori laughed. She was beautiful in her gratitude for the sixteen hundred dollars she did win, since she got five out of six winning numbers. She refused to participate in the “coulda-shoulda-woulda” of her near miss for the millions. She looked me in the eye and said, “Yesterday I had a dollar. Today I have sixteen hundred dollars. This is good!”

Do you have a favorite story of a near miss? Can you tell it happily, or do you tell it with regret? If you let go of outcomes, your whole life is just one, long, interesting story. Some wins, some losses. Keep looking forward to the next win and you’ll be happy every day of your life.

Today’s Affirmation: “I celebrate every demonstration of abundance in my life!”

“My friend and I almost won a million dollars,” shared Steve, the poker player sitting next to me at the table.

He shook his head with regret and told me his story.

“We were in Las Vegas and this casino has just installed the very first million-dollar jackpot machine. My buddy and I were standing in front of it and joking and talking over what we were going to do next. We planned to sit down at the machine and play for the million dollars and were figuring out what amount we would each put in, when a young surfer-dude type sat down at the very machine we were going to play.

“In only a few pulls of the slot machine handle, suddenly the machine went crazy – lights started flashing and music started playing,” said Rick, shaking his head. “He did it – he hit the million dollar jackpot on the very machine we were going to play!”

“Oh, I’m so sorry,” I commiserated. “That must have hurt!”

“Yep,” Steve sighed. “It still does.”

And I could see it did. Every time he replays that memory of loss, he hurts himself again with it.

Are their losses in your life that you replay over and over again? Life may have hurt you once, but you hurt yourself over and over again with your constant replays of the loss.

Don’t replay negative experiences. Find the lesson, learn and grow from the experience if you can, but in any case, move on! Let the past remain in the past, except for glorious winning moments that you bring out frequently to revel in and enjoy again and again.

Life has many misses and many hits. I want to play the Hit Parade, not the Sob Story, over and over. And I want to create new hits, too! That doesn’t come from the energy of mourning or feeling like a victim.

Focus on what you want, and let go of the images of what you don’t want. You’re creating your future from what you focus on now. Today, focus on winning, treasure, glory, love, friendship, caring, happy surprises, gifts given and received, life and breath, sunshine and rainbows! Put a smile on your face and embrace the day to come, with all its treasures about to be received.

Love and blessings to you!
