Sleep Like a Baby!

Chellie Meme - Advantage of Age

“The last refuge of the insomniac is a sense of superiority to the sleeping world.”—Leonard Cohen

Insomnia used to upset me. I would have trouble falling asleep, then wake up in the middle of the night, angry and anxious about not getting enough rest. I just knew I would be tired and crabby in the morning. This negative energy fed on itself, and I had more and more sleepless nights. I was trapped in my negative thoughts about sleeplessness.

As I began working with positive affirmations, I focused my positive energy on money and business, but forgot to apply the same principles to my sleep habits. Duh! After about the thousandth time, I saw what I was doing to myself and knew I could change my mind and change my sleep. I started doing some positive affirmations about my restful sleep.

The next night I woke up at 1:00 A.M., I smiled to myself. Now was my opportunity to put positive thinking into practice. I decided that if I was awake, it must be for a reason. I did have a problem on my mind, so my first action was to get pen and paper and write down the problem, and any solutions to it I could think of. Next, I said to myself that no matter how much or how little sleep I got that night, it would be enough, and I would feel rested, alert, and full of energy in the morning. Perhaps I had been telling myself that I needed eight hours of sleep when my body didn’t really need that much. My body would just have to be in charge—if I slept, it would be because I needed sleep, and if I didn’t sleep, it would be because I had gotten all the sleep I needed. I picked up a book and read until I got sleepy, turned out the light and went back to sleep.

In the morning, I awoke feeling great. I don’t remember how many actual hours of sleep I got that night, but I have found that it doesn’t matter as much as my attitude about it does. Sometimes I get eight hours of sleep and feel great, and sometimes I get only four hours of sleep—but I still feel great! By thinking that whatever amount of sleep I get is enough and that I will feel rested and energetic in the morning, I am not anxious about getting the “right” number of hours.

Anxiety won’t make you money, and anxiety won’t make you sleep. Sleeplessness is your opportunity to practice peace, serenity, trust, and calm. Then you can transfer those qualities to your waking hours—and your money-making hours.

Today’s Affirmation:
“I get all the sleep I need each night, and awake refreshed and energized each morning!”

Throughout my life, I have taken many workshops. I have seen how people can receive incredible amounts of useful information, and go home energized and excited from the experience they had—they are on “workshop high.” It lasts about three days. Then they wake up one morning struggling to apply what they learned, without knowing how to systematically put all the new information into practice in their daily lives. The same thing often happens when people read self-help books. They start out with great intentions and maybe they are able to implement one or two positive changes from hundreds of new suggestions. Then a problem comes up, their old habits intrude, the old negative voice plays its rusty recording once more, and the good feeling evaporates. Grudgingly, helplessly, they fall back into the same patterns of behavior they were trying to avoid.

To cope with this problem, I designed my workshop to take place over eight weeks, so participants could assimilate the information and put it into practice over time. The goal was to help people create new habits of thinking and behavior, which would produce actual results during the class. Learning should be fun, so I teach by story, participation and example. I wanted to translate this workshop process into the book, without having it degenerate into a “to do” list of instructions, chapter by chapter.

That is why I wrote this book in a page-a-day format. It was designed to help you succeed through changing your attitudes and beliefs about money and motivating you to take actions that produce abundance through a daily practice. You don’t have to try to take in all the information at once; you don’t have to twist yourself into a complete transformation today. Just take one step every day: One thought, one goal, one action every day of the year and you can change your financial condition, increase your income, live debt-free, have work you love.

The page-a-day idea didn’t come immediately. I struggled for awhile, looking at all the financial books in the bookstores and wondering how I could make mine different. But I had been reading The Daily Word from Unity Church every day since the 70s, and one day while I was driving (a great place for creative thinking!), it struck me to do my book like that. I could get people interested through the stories, motivate them, and help them to make changes slowly on a daily basis.

I thought I was a genius with this idea until I had written 100 stories and realized I had 265 more to write! Oy. Every night before I went to sleep, I prayed, “Dear God, please send stories!” And stories came. I’d wake up around 5:00 am and go directly to my computer and start writing them down before breakfast.

Why do we sleep? Perchance to dream, to connect to our soul, God, the Universe. To access hidden parts of our minds, remember and deepen in awareness.

And to get stories.

Anxiety won’t make you money, and anxiety won’t make you sleep.

Prosperity is a habit. You have to practice it every day.
