“Look at every path closely and deliberately, then ask ourselves this crucial question: Does this path have a heart? If it does, then the path is good. If it doesn’t, then it is of no use.”—Carlos Castaneda
I had an interesting philosophical conversation one evening with a man I met in a restaurant. (Okay, a man I picked up in a bar.) I often get into conversations about the meaning of life and the nature of reality with people, since I think that’s one of the most important things to figure out while we’re here on the planet.
I remember telling him about my philosophy of choosing beliefs that make me happy. He seemed to get hung up on whether my beliefs were really true or not. Since beliefs about God, religion, metaphysics, and the purpose of life tend to be scientifically unprovable, I kept trying to explain that it didn’t matter to me whether the beliefs I had chosen were true or not. They had to be taken on faith, and I had just decided to have faith in things that I thought worked with a universal theory of good and made me feel good to believe them.
After about an hour of this conversation, he finally understood my meaning.
“Oh,” he said, realization dawning. “It doesn’t matter to you if your beliefs are true. It makes you happy to believe them and that’s enough for you. Is that right?”
“Yes!” I answered happily. “That’s it exactly!”
“I see.” We were quiet for a few moments as we digested our conversation.
Finally, I asked him, “What do you do for a living?”
“I’m a philosophy professor at U.C.L.A.,” he replied.
I was sure he was joking. “You are not,” I rebuked him.
“Oh, yes, I am,” he said, smiling.
“Show me your I.D. then,” I said, thinking I’d caught him. He pulled out his identification and sure enough, there it was written on his U.C.L.A. card: Associate Professor of Philosophy.
“That’s really funny,” I said. “I didn’t realize I was talking to a pro. How’d I do?”
“Well,” he said. “I’d give you an A!”
What do you believe? Does your path have a heart?

My Next Life by George Carlin
I want to live my next life backwards: You start out dead and get that out of the way.
Then you wake up in a nursing home feeling better every day. Then you get kicked out for being too healthy. Enjoy your retirement and collect your pension.
Then when you start work, you get a gold watch on your first day. You work 40 years until you’re too young to work.
You get ready for High School: drink alcohol, party, and you’re generally promiscuous.
Then you go to primary school, you become a kid, you play, and you have no responsibilities. Then you become a baby, and then… You spend your last 9 months floating peacefully in spa-like conditions – central heating, room service on tap, and then… You finish off as an orgasm.
I rest my case.
