The Day of My Enlightenment

Today’s Affirmation: “I create a wonderful, fulfilling life for myself and help others do the same!” Finally in touch with my own anger, I rocked in my chair, raging and blaming him for my life. Rock, rock, blame, blame. I was the martyr, the good one, the oppressed. Rock, rock. He was the bad guy, the perpetrator, the oppressor. Blame, rock. I sat and rocked, rocked and blamed, blamed and cried all afternoon.
All of a sudden, a voice from out of nowhere spoke in my ear three words that changed my life: “You picked him.”

The City Girl and the Farmer’s Wife

Today’s Affirmation: “I gratefully receive and enjoy life’s surprise packages!” I’m a city girl. Born and bred in suburbia, visits to the country were visits to another planet—rare and alien. Then I met Stan, who was raised on a farm in Montana. As our relationship progressed, he suggested a visit to the farm to visit his parents.

I was not his parents’ vision of the perfect woman for their son: Six years his senior, an actress in Hollywood, and divorced. I had never been on a farm. It was with some trepidation that I agreed to go—and they agreed to have me.

Jaws

Today’s Affirmation: “All my dues are paid in full.” As he started describing the details of the interaction with this terrible client, I drew a red flag on the white board. He continued his impassioned, anxious narrative. I drew some waves under the red flag. He described the next problem. I drew a shark fin amongst the waves. He went on. I drew “Doo-doo-doo-doo” under the waves. He kept going. Then the whole class, as one voice, started singing the theme music from Jaws.

Your People

Today’s Affirmation: “All My People praise me and pay me!” How much money is lost in life by people chasing people who don’t like them, trying to make them happy? It can be a boss, a client, or a family member. This person clearly isn’t one of Your People. Let them go! You will never please them, satisfy them or measure up to their vision of how you ought to be. You’ll make yourself crazy spending any time or effort on them.

Why Swim with Sharks When You Can Swim with Dolphins?

Today’s Affirmation: “I now attract people who reflect my highest good!” There are three kinds of fish in the sea: Dolphins, Sharks and Tuna. Dolphins are wonderful creatures: intelligent, happy, and playful. Sharks are eating machines. It’s not their fault; they were born that way. But their job is to eat you. Tuna fish are food. They don’t know that the blood in the water is their own. They think everything that happens to them is somebody else’s fault.

Luck

Today’s Affirmation: “I am a lucky person. A powerful winning force surrounds me!” (Mike Caro, Fundamentals of Poker) Poker is fun, challenging, and takes a combination of skill and luck. It is a game of strategy, assessing risks vs. rewards, and taking your best shot when the odds are with you. The great players have strong minds, strong wills, patience and knowledge of people honed by many hours of observation. And they have a positive winning attitude—they believe in their skill and they believe in their luck.

Irregular Expenses

Today’s Affirmation: “I have positive cash flow right here, right now, and always!” Irregular expenses are often budget-busters. This is because they aren’t a part of our regular, monthly expenses, and we tend to forget them. Then suddenly, like a harbinger of doom, there they are looming over your checkbook, cackling with glee that they’ve given you this nasty surprise.

Shopping for Love

Today’s Affirmation: “I am peaceful and content with all the riches in my life.” “Can’t buy me love,” sang The Beatles. But we can buy its cousin: Praise, which we use as a poor substitute for love. People crave love and acknowledgment beyond all other things. In a survey conducted by Ken Blanchard, author of The One Minute Manager, employees ranked “Feeling ‘in’ on things” and “Appreciation of work” as the number one and number two benefits they wanted most from their jobs. Higher wages ranked a distant fifth.
