    Do What Makes Money First

    I have three rules for making money:

    1.     Do what makes money now.

    2.     Do what makes money soon.

    3.     Do what makes money later.

    This is of primary importance if you are in sales or own your own business (then you’re in sales too). The primary responsibility of a business is to be profitable and the primary responsibility of a salesperson is to bring in the money. Without sales, there is no money. If there is no money, there will be no business.

    You need immediate money to survive. It’s no good spending all your time working on the big project that won’t materialize for a year if you have don’t have the money to survive until that big deal comes through. It’s okay to be building the big battleship, but you’d better make sure you have lots of little canoes going out in the meantime. On a weekly basis, I suggest spending 60 percent of your time on your daily bread and butter sales, 20 percent on mid-range sales, and 20 percent on the big deal that may take a long time to close.

    Do what makes money first. Everything else is administrivia.

    Finding More Time, Just Like Magic

    Complete this sentence; I would love to do more “X,” but I just don’t have the time.  This is a favorite of the working mom.  We are (after all) busy and sometimes over-scheduled.  And, we perceive ourselves to have time for certain activities while having to put other pursuits on the back burner.  And, at the rate we’re going that back burner isn’t getting turned on until we’re pushing 80.

    Case in point; one of my clients decided a few years ago that she has no time to read.  This is a minor source of disappointment for her, so I asked her about the decision and learned that she has gathered very impressive evidence to back her argument including; with a job and two children she’s too tired to read, a book takes so long to get through at her very slow rate it’s not worth it and if she’s going to be reading, she feels she should be reading something that is useful for her profession.  This sounds pretty convincing, don’t you think?

    But, how much of this is perception?  Are all of her reasons still true?  Or were they true when she made the decision, but now out of date?  I asked her to imagine that she had never made that decision about reading.  I asked her to throw out her reasons and start fresh.  The first thing that happened was she realized she didn’t have a book that she was excited about reading.

    That was an eye opener.  Most of us have had that delicious feeling of being so involved in a book, we can’t WAIT to get back to it.  She needed to have a book like that sitting on her bedside table instead of the MBA’s Guide to Managing Upward.  So she went to her local library – someplace she had not been to in a decade – and found a book that she thought she would enjoy.  She reported that it had been so long since she had picked up a fun, sexy, (dare I say “trashy?”) novel she almost felt like she was sneaking it home.  And like a child who is looking at a plastic pumpkin full of candy on Halloween, she couldn’t wait to devour it.

    Here’s an added bonus; when she went to the library, she took her children and everyone got a book.  After they checked out their books, they checked into the local Starbucks for cookies, juice, coffee and some quiet reading time.  30 minutes later she was 20 pages into her book and hooked.  Within 2 weeks, they were back to the library for more.

    So what happened here?  Her life circumstances didn’t change at all, but she suddenly was inspired to make time for reading.  Instead of telling herself there was not time, she found a reason for making the time, and it showed up.  Kind of like magic, but you and I can create this kind of magic daily.

    Coach Me Quick Tips for finding more time:

    Identify something you “wish you had time for.”

    Write down all the reasons you “don’t have that time.”

    Now, allow yourself to adopt the attitude that you do have time.  Imagine that something has changed and you now get to take time for this activity.  Once you have accepted that reality temporarily, list all of the reasons you do have the time.

    Take a look at the list of reasons why you do have the time to do your chosen activity.  Could you create any of these?  Do you see a new possibility?

    Stay open.  Life changes every minute and if you don’t get stuck in old decisions, reasons and beliefs, you will find more time to do what you love in life

    The Spinning Plates

    Robert, the doctor, had more energy than a power plant. He was excited and had a million goals. The problem was that his energy was too scattered. It’s fine to have a lot of goals, but it’s really difficult to try to get them all at once. You really can’t start four businesses at the same time and have them all be wildly successful. Robert wanted to build his medical practice, enroll and teach three different seminars, be a professional organizer, and start a new networking group.

    It was too much. He was running into difficulties at the networking meetings he was attending. He only had thirty seconds to introduce himself and he was trying to talk about all four businesses in that short time. Not only was this ineffective, but it actually worked against him because it made people doubt his credibility in any of the businesses. When I need a doctor, I want a doctor who is a full-time dedicated health practitioner, who eats, sleeps, walks, talks, breathes healing. Not someone who is thinking about three other businesses at the same time.

    Today’s Affirmation: “I focus my abundant energy and produce extraordinary results!”

     

    A speaker asked the audience “How many people would like to lose a couple of pounds?” Everyone raised their hands. Then she said, “How many people know what to do to make that happen?” Again, everybody raised their hands. “So why don’t you just do it already?” she asked. “You have the information to produce exactly the result you want!” There were sighs and groans all around.

    There are 500 television channels, 5 million-plus books listed on amazon.com, and zillions of pages of ezines, web sites, wikkipedia, etc. All the information you could ever want about how to be richer, smarter, more successful, healthier, thinner, younger (or at least look younger) is readily available at your fingertips.

    So why aren’t we rich already? Smarter? More successful? Healthier?

    The reason is this: it isn’t information that counts – it’s the action you take after you get the information.


    Action requires constant self-motivation, willingness to embrace change, willingness to fail until you get it right, and constant application of new behaviors that are outside your comfort zone.

    Arrgh.

    That’s the hardest thing for human beings to do. Interrupt our comfortable habits – even if destructive – to change and do things differently long enough, consistently enough, to make the new information take hold and operate our lives in new and better ways with more successful outcomes.

    A great coach or teacher can help you. Because they can see your blind spot, the thing that keeps you from your dreams, and they can keep watch and help you around it, over it, through it. You can’t see it because it’s your blind spot, but a good coach can. They help motivate and inspire you to take action. We need a coach, a mentor, a friend who’s been there and done that and can show us the road to success.

    That’s when all the results and rewards and dreams you wanted will be yours!

    Distractions

    It’s time to write now. I’m going to write. I stare at the blank page. Blank page. White. Snow. Weather. I wonder what the weather’s doing today. Cold. My hands are cold. Think I’ll go downstairs and get a cup of coffee to warm up my hands. Trudge, trudge down the rust carpeted steps, click, click, click my shoes tap on the kitchen tiles. Make coffee. Look around kitchen. Notice dishes and dirt—no fun, ignore. Notice newspaper—ahhh, maybe something interesting to write about in the newspaper. A good activity, research. Valuable. I’ll do that.

    Thirty minutes later: Feeling too guilty to continue reading paper. I should be writing! Back to the stairs, click, click, back up the stairs trudge, trudge. Blank page.

    The phone rings! Saved by the bell! Hello? No, thanks, I don’t want to change my long distance carrier. Disappointment. Phone in hand, I want to talk to somebody. Who’d be fun to talk to? I know, I’ll call my friend, Carol. Nope, she’s not home, how about Susan? Hey, Susan, how’s doin’?

    Today’s Affirmation: “I am inspired by my creative vision every day!”

     

    Once a month, I hold a Money Mastery Network mastermind group at my house. Composed of graduates of my Financial Stress Reduction® Workshops, they are all incredibly talented, smart, creative entrepreneurs as well as loving, kind, and caring friends. I’ve run this group for probably 15 years or so, and people tend to stay for years at a time.

    Since I don’t take more than 12 people, I always have a waiting list. One meeting, Lynne and Sandra were talking about how they waited for their space for a long time, and when the call came “there’s a space if you want it” they jumped at it.

    Whoever is participating in the group at any particular time, it is always magical. The deep love and support we have for each other allows each member to be completely authentic, share freely from the well of their creativity, work out problems, cry over tragedies, and get the most intelligent, loving feedback imaginable.

    One member of our group, Lynne Azpeitia, is a psychotherapist and coach who specializes in working with gifted and creative adults www.gifted-adults.com. When she gives her feedback, we all listen intently because she’ll point out to us certain behaviors we are exhibiting that are typical of gifted people.

    For example, someone asked how you would go about finding a good networking group when there are so many. I responded, “Google ‘networking in Los Angeles’, see what shows up that looks interesting, and go to the meeting. While you’re there, watch how people behave, how you feel in the room and see if it’s a fit. Then look for the warmest, friendliest, happy, successful looking dolphin-type person at the meeting and ask them where else they network. Then go to those meetings.”

    Everyone thought that was a great idea, and Lynne jumped in to tell me that was a great piece of advice and should go into an article or a book. As I made a note about it, she said, “That’s your genius, Chellie – these things just flow naturally from you. Gifted people aren’t always aware of the things they say and do that are special because it’s normal for them. They think everyone has ideas like that.”

    I looked at her and laughed, “Lynne, what a brilliant marketing niche you have invented. All your clients get to feel like they are gifted, creative, and a genius! I sure love getting feedback like that.”

    How do your clients feel about being a member of your community? If the answer isn’t “special”, “privileged” and “creative”, you might want to rethink your branding. My people are proud to be “Dolphins”.

    The Ballad of Love and Money

    Once upon a time in the Land of Milk and Honey, Love and Money lived together in peace and harmony, spreading joy and riches everywhere they went. Everyone in the country was rich, inside and out. Happiness shone on their faces and they praised God for their good fortune. In the natural order of things, Love and Money had many children: Kindness, Beauty, Appreciation, Generosity, Creativity, Grace, and Focus. They, too, bestowed their gifts on the people, who treasured them in return.

    The evil Witch of Lack and Lamentation hated the Land of Milk and Honey. She was invisible there. She cursed and screamed and jumped up and down but people just walked past her smiling. You can imagine how frustrating this was. She gnashed her teeth whenever she thought about Love and Money. “How dare they banish me from their kingdom!” she cried. “I haven’t been able to give away a poisoned apple there in decades!”

    She fumed over the situation with a black heart, but couldn’t figure out how to get the people of the Land of Milk and Honey to see her. Frustrated, she called a conference of her friends Anger, Envy, Lust, Greed, Sloth, Despair, and Poverty to discuss the problem. She asked each one if they were able to enter the hearts and minds of the people of the Land of Milk and Honey. But they were invisible there, too, and no one paid them any mind at all. The meeting was disintegrating into fights and arguments, when a quiet voice at the back of the room broke in. “I can help you,” said Distraction. “I am only sometimes visible there, but if we await the right opportunities, we can strike the people together.”

    And so they did. Distraction waited in the streets of the Land of Milk and Honey for the children of Love and Money. When Kindness stubbed his toe and yelled “Ouch!” Distraction introduced him to Anger. When Beauty bumped into a prettier girl, he presented her to Envy. When Appreciation accidentally caught sight of a woman bathing in the lake, Distraction brought over Lust. He introduced Generosity to Greed, Creativity to Sloth and Grace to Despair. And suddenly the Witch of Lack and Lamentation was visible all over town. Unable to cope with their children’s turmoil, Love and Money got divorced and went their separate ways.

    But try as he might, Distraction was never able to introduce Focus to Poverty. They screamed and yelled, threw stones and rolled in the dust at his feet, but Focus refused to look at them. “I have no thought to spare for you!” Focus cried. “I’m busy with dreams and goals I want to pursue!” Focus started an Internet business, milkandhoney.com, to distribute food and drink to the masses, employed all his brothers and sisters, and retired a billionaire to his castle on the hill. At Focus’ home, Love and Money were reconciled, and their children danced joyfully. They vowed to forever work with Focus, and they all lived happily ever after.

    Today’s Affirmation: “The more I focus on success, the more love and money are mine!”

     

    It’s a bit odd how creativity works. When writing this book, I had in mind that I would teach by story – all the master gurus taught by telling tales and parables: Jesus, Buddha, Sufi masters, etc. Stories are memorable and infused with emotion, have a twist or unique ending, and make a point that is remembered long after all the “to do” lists are forgotten.

    Still, it surprised me when a poem would flow out, or this Land of Milk and Honey story. It was fun writing it, and I was quite partial to the character of the Wicked Witch of Lack and Lamentation who made me laugh. She’s a classic Angry Tuna, frustrated and complaining, until she’s helped to take action by Distraction and morphs into a true Shark.

    But Focus wins the day. He could also have been named Determination, or Discipline, or Follow-Through. Ultimately, it is that quality that unites all the others and creates success. Without it, all are doomed.

    Your Money

    Your money is Your Money. You can’t lose money that’s yours and you can’t get money that isn’t yours.

    It might appear that you can. Someone breaks into your house and steals your jewelry, your stereo, television, and other things you bought and paid for. It certainly looks like you’ve lost money that’s yours. And it definitely looks like the thief got money and items that weren’t his.

    But that is only in the short term. If you take a longer view, you will find that you always replace the stolen items. Maybe you had insurance that replaced everything for you. Or someone gives you a television they don’t need anymore. Or you get a raise, a promotion, or a new job that pays you more money. The money that was taken from you has been replaced because it was Your Money.

    Today’s Affirmation: “My Money is pouring into my life today from all directions!”

     

    The number one reason most people don’t succeed as well as they’d like to is that they don’t follow up or follow through. Everyone knows “what goes around comes around” but then they don’t recognize when they fail to pay a bill, that means someone won’t be paying their bill. In the flurry of calling people that they need to speak with, they forget to return the calls from people who needed to speak to them.

    My friend, Harriet Cohen, was quite impassioned about this when she wrote:

    Is Follow-up passé?

    I don’t get it.. Am I that old fashioned?  Do people just like to make empty promises?  If you say you are going to call or e-mail why don’t you do it?  It’s like the old line that if a man says he’ll call it means sometime in his lifetime.  Sorry ladies you are just as bad.

    It happened again today.  A successful businesswoman was sent important information via e-mails and phone and never returned the calls, and is upset because she may have missed a deadline.  I have a client doing career transition and he gets people who offer to help then never do.  Do people just like to make empty promises?  Is there a point?

    How many ways and how many times do people have to be told the key is the follow-up; not just doing it once but over and over until the deal is closed.  People go to networking meetings and collect business cards.  What will you do with the collection?  Do you e-mail and say it was nice meeting them or are you waiting for them to make the 1st move?  If that’s the case, why did you take the card to begin with? What was your purpose?

    People complain they get nothing from networking meetings but they don’t follow up.  I have even been known to send handwritten thank you notes; now that’s old fashioned but yes it gets remembered.

    My clients know I’ll connect with them within 24 hours.  I follow up with new people I meet almost as quickly and I stay in touch.  What’s your method of following up?  If you don’t have one you better get one soon before it makes no difference if you follow-up

    No Moxie, No Money

    No guts, no glory.

    No courage, no cash.

    No moxie, no money.

    You won’t make any money by waiting around for people to give you some. That’s not how it works. You have to go get it. What would your life be like if only you had the guts to go get what you really wanted?

    Rewrite the story of your life from the point of view of someone with a lot of moxie. What would that person have done differently? What risks would they have taken that you didn’t? Why didn’t you take them? Because of who wouldn’t approve or like you?

    Here’s a newsflash: They probably don’t approve or like you anyway. So get up, get out, and go do what you want!

    Today’s Affirmation: “I have all the moxie I need to make all the money I want.”

     

    I spent a whole day once judging a writing contest on www.Bookrix.com. I was very flattered to have been asked to be a guest judge, and review the top ten submissions in their Dear Diary writing contest. “It will take about 2-3 hours of your time,” said my friend Amber Sims-Hinterplattner.

    No, no. No way can I skim through the submissions. The teacher in me won’t allow that. I have to give each one my thoughtful attention and write some critiques that can be useful and meaningful to the authors.  So it was 5 hours worth and I only read 7 of them…

    Luckily for me, the submissions were very creative and fun to read! I had a ball, and I want to alert you to this wonderful writing community. They have over 16,000 books you can read online for free, they have a social community that connects writers and readers, writing contests, etc. Check them out!

    There are special interest communities all over the web. You can create your own groups, too. Pick an interest, create a forum, spread the word, and gather fans. Have fun!

    Life is good.

    The Power of “No”

    I once worked for two titans of the motion picture industry, Edgar Scherick and Scott Rudin. Edgar was the older, more experienced mogul and Scott was the up-and-coming young counterpart. At the time, I was pursuing a career behind the camera in the motion picture industry and was Edgar’s Executive Assistant.

    One day, they fired the office gofer (you know, “go fer” this and “go fer” that). They weren’t going to hire a new one, and the rest of us in the office were anxious about who was going to get the schlepping assignments from then on.

    I decided that it wasn’t going to be me. I was reading a great book at the time, When I Say “No” I Feel Guilty by Manuel Smith. Smith gave wonderful tools for being more assertive and less of a people-pleaser. I knew that if I started doing some of the gofer’s tasks, I would be doomed to that position and respect for me would disappear along with any dreams of advancement. I realized that if I was asked to do this work and refused, I might get fired. But if the price of working there was that I had to be in the lowest dead-end job, then I shouldn’t be there anyway.

    Several days later, Scott and Edgar had a meeting at MGM. Scott always drove the two of them to these meetings, and the gofer would pick up Edgar after the meeting and take him to his next appointment. Edgar knew someone new had to be given this assignment, but didn’t choose anyone. He just walked out of the office saying, “Somebody’s going to have to pick me up at five o’clock at MGM.” The entire staff froze.

    Scott knew then that he had to pick the new gofer. He turned around, saw me and said, “Chellie, pick Edgar up at five o’clock at MGM.”

    My heart pounding, my throat dry, I looked him straight in the eye and said, “No.” Nothing else, just “no.” (The book said not to give your reasons for saying no, or the conversation would degenerate into an argument over the validity of your reasons.)

    He was totally taken aback by this and laughed. He said, “You have to! Pick Edgar up at 5:00!”

    I said, “No” again. (Smith calls this technique “broken record”—just repeat your position.)

    He stared at me for a long moment. I could see the wheels turning in his mind. I held my breath. Was I going to be fired?

    Then Scott turned to the young man seated near him and said, “Fine. Then you do it.” He said, “Okay.” And became the office gofer from then on.

    We have more power of “no” than we know. Two-year-olds know this instinctively, but some adults have forgotten. Find a two-year-old and remember. Then practice.

    Today’s Affirmation: “I make choices that make me happy.”

     

    Edgar Scherick is no longer with us, but Scott Rudin, who was rather the “boy wonder” in his early 20s when I knew him, has come a very long way up to the top of the Hollywood food chain. Producer of many top-of-the-line films including The Hours, The Addams Family, The Queen, and The Social Network, he has won many honors, including the Academy Award for Best Picture for No Country for Old Men.

    He’s also been awarded the dubious title of one of “New York’s Worst Bosses” on gawker.com in 2007 and was profiled in a Wall Street Journal article entitled “Boss-Zilla”. Shudder. One account mentions he once went through 250 assistants in one year (although he claimed he could only count 119) – he was reputed to be the model for the evil producer played by Kevin Spacey in Swimming with Sharks.

    Oh, dear. He wasn’t quite that bad when I worked for him – I’m sure it was fortunate for me that he was in New York most of the time. Actually, I liked and admired him – he was brilliant and creative and quick, and we got along.

    Edgar was the scary one to me. He would scream at the top of his lungs and turn red in the face. Once he yelled at a production assistant who hadn’t accomplished a task, jumped up on my desk and pounded the ceiling until plaster rained down on us. Picture Chellie as a small animal who freezes in place because motion attracts the predator. When he jumped off the table and looked at me, I just said, “So do you want to call Freddie Fields now?” They told me later he said I was “unflappable.” Nope, frozen stiff is what I was, but redirection was a tool I found handy for survival.

    BTW, Carlton Cuse, who grew up to become the executive producer and screenwriter of Lost worked in our office, as did Michael Barnathan, who later was one of the producers of the Harry Potter movies, and Donna Smith who was Associate Producer on The Terminator and became the first female Vice President in charge of Production at a major studio. There was a lot of talent in that office!

    I had taken the job with Scott because I wanted to be a producer’s assistant. I figured I would get an overview of all the jobs in the film industry and then I could decide if there was a job I wanted  on the other side of the camera. But the two years I spent with Scott and Edgar convinced me that it was no place for me. There was too much yelling. I felt I’d have to become used to that, or become a screamer myself, and I just didn’t have it in me to do either. I remember the day I opened up the want ads and prayed, “Please God, please – send me a nice little bookkeeping job with nice, normal people like I had before.”

    And soon enough, off I went. Pretty good move, too, as it turned out. I love my life!

    And there’s no yelling.

    A Date at the Races

    Even if you swim with dolphins, it’s best if you swim in the same direction. It’s hard to build relationships with people who are financially invested in projects diametrically opposed to yours. Let me tell you about my date with Steve:

    Steve and I had a date to go to the races. I had never been to the horse races before, and was excited about going. Before the race, we sat down in the kitchen and picked our horses from the program. Steve was clearly an experienced handicapper, looking over the horses, jockeys, their experience and the odds on each race. Knowing nothing, I just looked at all the names and picked the ones that sounded/felt/good or just “grabbed me” in some way. Rolling his eyes, Steve snorted his contempt for my methods, but laughingly said, “Well, you’ll probably have beginner’s luck and win.”

    How prophetic of him. As I put my meager two-dollar bets on my horses, Steve made much bigger bets on his. Of course mine won. Race after race. I screamed with excitement and joy while Steve morosely tore up his losing tickets. He littered the ground in front of him with the remnants of his losses as I joyfully ran off to collect my winnings.

    The date was not going well.

    The ninth and last race arrived. Steve buried his face in the race form, then looked up at me and asked, “What horse did you pick in the ninth?” I’ll never forget the name of this horse: Azalia Adios. When I told him the name, Steve brightened, looked again at his racing form, and said, “I think you’ve finally picked a good horse!” He bet all his remaining money on this horse coming in first place, while I upped my bet to four dollars. As we waited with excited anticipation, finally having bet on the same horse, I knew we had more than money riding on this race.

    Azalia Adios was out of the gate fast. He took fourth position and held it until the straightaway, when he pulled out in front of all the other horses! First place! We won! Steve made back all of his losses and then some. Whew. The date ended on a high note after all.

    The morals of this story are:

    1.     Not every great horse will win the race.

    2.     Not every mediocre horse will lose the race.

    3.     But if you go to the races with a date, bet on the same horse!

    The poker world continues to reel over the Department of Justice’s action on “Black Friday” last year, April 15, when it shut down the three largest online poker sites Pokerstars, Absolute Poker.com and Full Tilt, accused the owners of illegal online gambling, money laundering and fraud.

    The fallout from that action continues. The estimated 10 million US poker players have been unable to access these sites and their money on deposit there. Although an agreement was struck between Pokerstars, Full Tilt and the DOJ to allow players to withdraw their money, Pokerstars was the only site to return the players funds to them. Absolute Poker filed bankruptcy as did Full Tilt.

    Most of the televised poker shows have been pulled off the air, as these online poker sites were the major advertisers backing them. The sites have reported a drop-off in business of 38-50%. People lost their jobs in affiliated businesses like the poker magazines which relied on these sites for advertising revenues. Players who live close to brick-and-mortar casinos are flocking there, but there are many players who don’t.  U.S. Professional poker players have moved to foreign countries.

    Reuters.com reported “Antigua and Barbuda, licensee of several Internet gaming companies including Absolute Poker, are considering suing the United States for violating global trade law by shutting down several major online poker sites.  In 2005, the World Trade Organization (WTO) had ruled the United States violated international agreements on trade by prosecuting operators of offshore gaming sites, awarding the Caribbean country $21 million.”

    There are bills in committee in Congress to legalize, regulate, and tax online poker. Sounds like a good plan to me – we could use these millions in our budget, don’t you think?

    After all, there are plenty of legal brick-and-mortar casinos, state-sponsored lotteries, church sponsored bingo games, etc. Why should online poker alone be outlawed? Something’s fishy somewhere. My guess is that the powers-that-be in the government weren’t able to come to an agreement with the online gambling sites about the money that would be due in fees, regulation, and taxes, etc. so they’re playing hardball now.

    More shall be revealed.

    Flexibility

    The Rabbi said to my friend, Shelley, “You shouldn’t work so hard. You should be dating, meet a nice man, get married.”

    Shelley is happily single and works hard because she wants to. A trifle annoyed at him for “shoulding” on her, she looked at him thoughtfully and inquired, “Are you offering to fix me up with someone?”

    “Oh, well, I don’t know,” he replied, “What kind of a man are you looking for?”

    Shelley answered, “He has to be 5’8,” make $200,000 a year, and he has to be Jewish.”

    The Rabbi laughed. “Are you flexible about that?” he asked.

    She thought a moment, then said sweetly, “Okay. He has to be 5’8,” make $200,000 a year, and he doesn’t have to be Jewish.”

    That was the last time the Rabbi mentioned dating to Shelley.

    Today’s Affirmation: “I create my life just the way I like it.”

     

    I laughed so hard when Shelley told me this story. Sharp little wit, there, eh? I love it when people have the perfect come back on the spur of the moment. Humor is just one of the best things in life.

    Every now and then, just the right phrase or quip occurs to me, too, and it makes me so happy to make people laugh.

    Back in the day, I was rehearing a USO show with a college theater group. We called it ”The Cohan Company” and we did a lot of Cohan tunes and other American themed skits and songs. We did a tour of army bases in California – my first experience of “Bus-and-Truck” touring.

    We’d get up early, pack up our personal belongings, sets, and costumes, and drive to the next base. Unpack, set up for the show, have lunch at the commissary, do the show, meet the officers afterward for a reception (always including a lovely white sheet cake decorated with “Welcome Cohan Company”), pack up, drive to the next base, set up for the show, have dinner at the commissary, do the show, and meet the officers afterward for a reception. We got a little sugar-crazed from all the white cake and started hoping they’d skip it at the next base, but they never did. And we had to eat it, you know?

    There were two guys in “The Cohan Company”, Mike and Ken, who were terrific punsters. They had a running patter every day filled with supremely groanable puns.

    One day these two guys and I were talking together in the rehearsal hall when our musical director, Craig, came walking in.

    “Look, here comes Craig,” said Ken.

    “Yes, and he’s all alone,” said Mike.

    “He’s the Lone Arranger!” I quipped, and they cracked up. It was my crowning moment of that summer. Hee.

    Take a break today and laugh. Watch a comedy, listen to a comedian, tell someone a funny story. Humor is the best part of being human.

    Men, Women, and Money

    The subject of money gets very sticky when it intrudes into relationships. Consumer Credit Counselors has stated that 50 percent of marriages end in divorce and in 80 percent of the divorces, finances are a significant issue. In other days in other cultures, women did not own property, they were property. Nowadays, women are often a major contributor to the family income stream.

    John Gray, in an article published in Currency entitled Mars and Venus on a Budget wrote, “Shifting financial realities have had a huge and positive impact on how men and women are loving each other. I believe that the more involved a woman is with money, the more fully she participates in the relationship.” In my opinion, the biggest problem is that everybody’s talking about money in general, but nobody’s talking about “my money” and “your money” specifically.

    Today’s Affirmation: “My significant other and I make beautiful music—and money—together!”

     

    In the book, “Women Don’t Ask” by Linda Babcock and Sara Laschever, the authors outline some of the ways in which men still control the majority of the economic and political environments in which women live and work and the subtle and pervasive ways in which our culture continually reinforce these gender differences.

    Author Linda Babcock told a story about how, even though she made more money than her husband, she let him handle the finances when they went out, pay for dinners, etc. One day, her 3-year-old daughter and she went to a drugstore, and her daughter saw a stuffed toy she wanted and asked, “Do you have enough money to buy that for me, Mommy? Do girls have money, or is it just boys that have money?” Linda of course was horrified. Their family habits had communicated to their daughter that men had money but women didn’t.

    Women still wait for men to ask them to the dance, on a date, to get married. Although 76% of married women work outside the home, the child care and household duties still reside with them. Women are always telling me their husband “helps them” with the housework. But that still assumes housework is their job, which the men sometimes “help with”, doesn’t it? At the dinner table, men remain seated and women serve, men drive more than women, women take their husband’s name at marriage.

    85% of divorced women receive no alimony, but homemaking is still the largest single occupation in the US. Accustomed to seeing most other women devote a huge proportion of their adult lives to unpaid work, women enter the traditional work force unaccustomed to evaluating their time and abilities in economic terms.

    I recommend that men and women in relationships take these cultural factors into account when discussing their financial goals and desires. If the woman is employed or running a business, there should be equality in responsibility for household chores and an equal amount of time devoted to them. If the woman is not working outside the home, I recommend they agree on a dollar figure that all of the household tasks are worth, and treat her worth to the family accordingly.

    But if one spouse is a business owner and the other spouse is an employee of a company, the business owner needs to know that the employee spouse is not going to be able to understand the risk-taking that is involved in making their business profitable, i.e., expenses for marketing, PR, sales training, coaching and consulting, attending conferences, virtual assistants, and social media among others. Don’t expect to run these expenses by your spouse on an individual basis. They will be more interested in saving the expense of these items and may not recognize that what looks like an expense today will look like a money-making investment when it pays off down the road. What your partner needs from you is a business plan that shows when you expect to be profitable and how much that profit will contribute to the bottom line of the family. Commit to that, and how you get there is your business.
