    When to Raise Your Price

    “I got a raise!” Most people are familiar with the joy that comes with that good news, but every employee knows the nervous anxiety that goes along with asking for a raise. It is no different for self-employed people, except for the added difficulty that they must ask many different “employers” (clients) for that raise. Knowing the best times to raise your fees (salary) will help ease your discomfort and you will encounter the least resistance. Raise your fees when:

    1. You have too much work and not enough time. Success is yours! Everyone admires and appreciates you. You are in demand. Now you find yourself working until the wee hours night after night trying to get all the work done. This is the perfect time to get a raise—you are obviously worth it! If extra work is not worth extra money, it is not worth being done by you. If you are self-employed, you may lose a few clients when you increase your rates, but you will make up for that by making more money working fewer hours for the clients you retain.

    2. A market survey shows your pricing is lower than average. If you are on salary, you should always be aware of the going rate of pay for your job position with your skill set and experience. The Small Business Administration has stated that the number one reason small businesses go under is that they don’t charge enough for their product or service. If you are under-priced, you will attract customers who are only interested in getting the most for the cheapest price; you will burn out working long hours for survival wages…

    Today’s Affirmation: “I have perfect timing for getting perfect pay!”

    My blog yesterday on “Give Yourself a Raise” got a lot of responses. That is usually the case whenever I talk about this subject as it addresses everyone’s fear about money. Most people believe the number one factor in buying decisions is price. That’s true for some things, but not all things.

    A woman named Connie wrote me to say: “What do you do when there are tons of people wanting to undercut the industry? Her husband quoted a certain amount for a construction job but then talked to someone in his industry “who gets top dollar for his work” and “upgraded his consciousness to a higher level, bid higher, but it just doesn’t fly”.

    Here’s my response:

    Thanks for your email and story. I appreciate your taking the time to ask this question – it’s a good one.

    This is always the question with a competitive marketplace. “Price wars” drive down the price for everyone, but there’s always a floor that people can’t go below or you’re working for free. I don’t care if I get all the business there is if I can’t make a living from doing the work…

    There’s a difference if you’re marketing the exact same “product” like a coffee mug – if it’s exactly the same coffee mug, a consumer wants the cheapest one. But with services, you want some qualities of being – I want the best coach, therapist, chiropractor, doctor, interior designer I can get and I understand the best isn’t going to be the cheapest. Services take time to deliver and that’s a finite resource – you’re going to run out of it. So if you’re selling time, you can charge more for your time the more experienced you are and the more popular you get.

    I remember being taught once there are three things in pricing:

    1. Good
    2. Fast
    3. Cheap

    You can have two of the three but not all three: good and fast but not cheap, good and cheap but not fast, or fast and cheap but not good.

    Even with the top notch professionals, there are people who will bid on their services and ask for deep discounts or “match this bid” or try to tell you the going rate is “x” and you can’t charge more than that, etc. They are welcome to go elsewhere to shop; you don’t have to lower your price or your standards. This requires a certain fortitude and determination as it’s scary to turn down work when you’ve got bills to pay and the next paying client isn’t visible.

    Are there times when you will lower your price? Sure! Sometimes you’ve got to make an exception and do the next gig just because you need some dollars in the door now. But if this becomes your habit, you’re operating from fear instead of faith, and the Universe starts to think you just want “x” level jobs and starts sending those instead of the rich, wonderful, dolphin clients who praise you and pay you what you truly deserve. These clients may be fewer so you may have to do more marketing and selling to reach them in the numbers you need, but the payoff will be in a richer life.

    Give Yourself a Raise

    Give yourself a raise. Ask for more money. You’re worth it!

    Many people have a hard time asking for their worth. They know their value, but are afraid of the reaction they might get if they ask for it. They get scared that their clients or bosses will feel they have over-priced themselves and that they will find someone else who will do it for less. This is generally a groundless fear. People do business with you for one primary reason—they like you. Sure, they want to save money, get a good deal, and a pay a fair price. But if you are doing a great job for them, they don’t want to change and have to find and hire someone else who may not be able to do as good a job as you are doing.

    A music composer named Steve took my workshop a few years ago, and had just found a new agent to represent him. He was very happy with the new agent, who had a great reputation, lots of experience and clout. But he was concerned because the agent wanted to increase his price from $150,000 to $200,000 per film. He said he just felt he couldn’t ask for that much money.

    I asked him if there were any composers working in the industry who made that much money. “Well, of course there are,” he said immediately. “There are famous composers who get paid millions of dollars per picture.”

    So I told him that $200,000 wasn’t enough—he should ask for $400,000. He was totally shocked by that amount, which seemed outrageous. I told him to practice saying “I am paid $400,000 per film, I am paid $400,000 per film,” twenty times per day for the next week. He needed to say it with positive emotion and intention behind it until he believed it. Steve laughed, but he agreed to try it.

    At the next class session, I asked him if he had practiced stating his new price. He answered that he had and that it felt good. “Does $200,000 per picture sound like a reasonable amount of money now?” I asked him.
    “As a matter of fact, now it doesn’t sound like enough!” he answered, which provoked gales of laughter from his classmates.

    The reason this exercise works is that it helps you to convince yourself that you’re worth the money. When you establish your price, you are telling people what you think you’re worth. They take their cue from you. If you state your new price tentatively, fearfully, or questioningly, they’re going to spit it back in your face and demand a lower price. If you state it confidently, like this high price is really unbelievably cheap, they will see the respect you have for yourself and more likely accede to your request. After all, if you’re getting that much money, you must be worth it!

    Today’s Affirmation: “I love to ask for money and I get paid top dollar when I do!”

    I’ve received this email a couple of times, and I can relate to the groundswell of anger and frustration in the general populace of the American people that produced it. With the Republican/Democrat standoff in Congress over the debt ceiling and the continuing recessionary times, the people want their elected representatives to represent them and fix it. But the overwhelming sensibility is that they have voted themselves such a rich package of lifetime benefits that they have lost touch with the needs of the American people.

    From that perspective, this resolution makes a lot of sense. What do you think? Do chime in!

    Subject: Amendment change

    The 26th amendment (granting the right to vote for 18 year-olds) took only 3 months & 8 days to be ratified! Why? Simple! We, the people, demanded it. That was in 1971…before computers, before email, before cell phones, etc.

    Of the 27 amendments to the Constitution, seven (7) took 1 year or less to become the law of the land…all because of public pressure.

    I’m asking each addressee to forward this email to a minimum of twenty people on their address list; in turn ask each of those to do likewise.

    In three days, most people in The United States of America will have received the message. This is one idea that really should be passed around.

    Congressional Reform Act of 2011

    1. No Tenure / No Pension. A Congressman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when they are out of office.

    2. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social Security. All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system, and Congress participates with the American people. It may not be used for any other purpose.

    3. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans do.

    4. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.

    5. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American people.

    6. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American people.

    7. All contracts with past and present Congressmen are void effective 1/1/12. The American people did not make this contract with Congressmen. Congressmen made all these contracts for themselves. Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, so ours should serve their term(s), then go home and back to work.

    If each person contacts a minimum of twenty people then it will only take three days for most people (in the U.S. ) to receive the message. Maybe now is time.

    THIS IS HOW YOU FIX CONGRESS!!!!!

    The Negotiating Game

    Many people run into trouble when it comes to negotiating money. This applies to salaries, pay raises, prices of products, and fees for services. Often fearful of asking for too much, they make the opposite mistake and ask for too little. It’s like they study the situation very carefully, figure out the least amount they can possible ask for and still be able to eke out a living, and then ask for their rock bottom line amount. Then, when their prospective boss or client tries to negotiate a better price, they are angry and resentful. How, they think, can this person ask for a better price—don’t they know this is an incredible deal and the cheapest price around?

    Well, no, they don’t know! They are playing the negotiating game. It is a win-win scenario if it’s played correctly. This is how to play it:

    1. Seller figures out bottom line price.
    2. Seller asks for amount above bottom line price.
    3. Buyer asks for reduction in Seller’s price.
    4. Compromise is reached in the middle.
    5. Every dollar Seller got above his bottom line, he wins.
    6. Every dollar Buyer gets Seller to reduce his asking price, he wins.
    7. End game: Win-Win.

    You can see that if the Seller goes in asking for his bottom line, he leaves the Buyer nothing to do but say “Yes” or “No.” Then somebody loses and is unhappy. To make it possible for everyone to win, the Seller must ask for more money than his bottom line.

    Note: If the Seller asks for an amount above his bottom line and the Buyer says yes immediately—he didn’t ask for enough money!

    Today’s Affirmation: “I am worth lots of money and always get paid what I’m worth!”

    My recent email “Sometimes You Have to Ask God for a Sign” (blog post July 27 “Facts or Excuses?”) really hit a nerve out there – I got more responses to that than any other article this year.

    Here’s one sample from a land on the other side of the world and my response (which was actually Spirit once again giving me my marching orders and thus, is probably for you, too!)

    There were some wonderful ‘pointers’ here for me.

    I love your intro to the book – very powerful. The truth is – we are what we think. I live on the other side of the world from you – one of the CIS Republics. I’ve lived in India for about a third of my life working as a professional volunteer for charities and a spiritual coach/mentor. Having moved back to my home country has been a change and a challenge. Challenge because I see so many people stuck in their lives (I mean, not that I am not in some aspects, ha!) – too much gloom and doom that I so pray to be used to change. But I think I’m still slightly stuck in the mentality that “no prophet is received in their own land”, ha! At times the “spirit” of the land gets to me, like recently – and your mail has become that “lamp unto my feel and light unto my path”. It’s time to let the light shine through – since that’s what I love doing the most, and make a sign on my desktop – “My God shall supply all my needs – according to His reaches and glory” – today’s daily affirmation for me.

    Thank you so much for your lovely note. How wonderful to hear from someone on the other side of the world. It is an amazing day and age we live in with so much connectedness.

    I know it’s hard to be the light when you’re surrounded by so much darkness, but that’s where the light is needed, isn’t it? Although we have to have some spaces where we’re surrounded with other light workers, otherwise we have a hard time maintaining the glow. I’m glad my affirmations and writings are helping keep your lamp lit, Sister-Sun! Keep on shining – you are helping more than you know or see.

    Glenda’s Creative Solution

    Glenda has two young children and serious medical problems. The kids have had medical problems, too, which makes it impossible for her to work full-time. But she needed to make a living. What to do?

    Glenda opened a quilting store. She only works one day a week, but the store is open seven days a week from morning until evening. Although the shop is fully staffed, Glenda has no payroll. She makes a nice profit and her income helps to support her family.

    How does she do it?

    Her store is completely staffed by volunteers. They are enthusiastic hobbyists, who love quilting. They are happy to spend their time among the quilts, quilting materials, books, and other hobbyists who share their passion. They receive discounts on merchandise, free materials, and free classes in exchange for their time. Everyone’s needs are met. Everyone is having fun.

    And Glenda’s not living on disability, moaning about her fate. She’s a successful business owner making a wonderful living for herself and her family.

    Think about how you might turn a hobby into a career. Can you use Glenda’s model to create something similar for yourself?

    Pick your price. Make your budgets. Save money. Don’t go into debt. Then find another way to get what you want!

    Today’s Affirmation: “I always find creative ways to have all that I desire!”

    If you ask kindergartners if they are an artist, 100% of them say yes.

    If you ask 5th graders if they’re an artist, only 10% say yes.

    Isn’t that sad? Somehow between the ages of 5 and 10, children get the message – from school, their parents, their friends, their peers, the media – that they aren’t an artist or that they aren’t creative.


    But we are all artists and all creative all the time, with every choice we make, every item of decoration or clothing or makeup or jewelry or furniture or housing or transportation we pick! Stop the judgment; stop comparing yourself to someone else’s choice of style or color. Yes, you can appreciate another person’s flair or creativity, but the point is not to put yourself down with it, but to be inspired by it. Let your own creative soul express itself and fly!

    Do something new and different today. Buy an article of clothing that’s just a little outside your comfort zone – a wild color that doesn’t go with anything else, or a funky piece of jewelry that isn’t your usual style. Go to a sci-fi movie if you never do, or go see a children’s cartoon even if you don’t have children. Reach out and make a phone call to someone you might not ordinarily call.

    Break the chains of habit and circumspection and create your life anew just a little bit today.

    Facts or Excuses?

    “You can make money or you can make excuses—you can’t make both.”—Unknown

    Sometimes the excuses are stated subtly, as though they were facts. This makes it difficult to tell that it’s really an excuse used to justify someone’s behavior. One summer afternoon, I was talking to a seminar leader, Mary, who had a successful business. She told me she was doing a lot of traveling and writing at the time, because everyone knew that the seminar business was dead in the summer.

    I looked at her, shocked: “I didn’t know that!” I exclaimed.

    She looked at me quizzically. “You mean your business doesn’t slow down in the summer?” she asked.

    “No,” I replied. “It’s a good thing, too, because I have to eat in the summertime!”

    “What about during the holidays?” she asked. “Surely you don’t get enrollments between Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day?”

    “Now that I difficulty I recognize,” I acknowledged. “People tend to use the holidays as an excuse to cut back on their activities and wait until next year to do anything new. So I tried to think if there were any reasons why someone might want to take a money management class during the holiday season.

    “I ask them if their work is slower during the holidays. If the answer is yes, then I ask if this slow period might be a good time to do a course, since they’ll have extra time on their hands. I ask if they often overspend at Christmas, and if that answer is yes, I suggest that this might be a perfect time to take a workshop that could coach you not to do that, pay off your debts, and start the New Year off right with a new attitude about attracting wealth and money. I’ve found that if you get the specific problems of the season working for you instead of against you, you’ll make a lot of money during a time when your competition thinks you can’t make any!

    “But I never heard that the seminar business was slow during the summer, so I never experienced it. Who told you that?”

    She didn’t remember who it was—probably the anonymous “They.” Be careful of buying into beliefs because

    “They say.” “They say” doesn’t pay.

    Today’s Affirmation: “All the time is a great time for me to succeed!”

    I just had a magnificent, magical session with my Transformational Coach/Consultant, Georgina Lindsey (georgina@nakedgrace.com), during which I was able to lay down a suitcase of sorrows I had been lugging around for oh, so many years.


    What a relief to let go of that ton-of-bricks burden! Oh, perhaps I still have some spider-web strands of attachment to it, but they are breaking one by one as I write this…

    Have you experienced this kind of breakthrough knowing and change? Since you’re a dolphin on my list, I’ll bet you have. It is through these understandings of the world we have created for ourselves that we see that our journey is our choice and that at any time we can choose to choose again.

    The entire journey to her was Spirit-led. I got home from a family dinner on a Sunday night and stood in my front garden gazing at the moon, when a handsome neighbor on a walk passed by and said hello. I smiled and chatted with him a short while, and he introduced himself, “I’m Peter,” and I said, “I’m Chellie.”

    He cocked his head and said, “Chellie?” and spelled it correctly – “C-h-e-l-l-i-e?”

    “Why, yes!” I said, surprised that he knew the spelling.

    “Is your last name Campbell?”

    I gaped at him. “How did you know that?”

    “You wrote ‘The Wealthy Spirit’, he said, smiling. “Your book is on my dining table right now. My coach, Georgina, gave it to me to read.”

    We met for coffee later and he told me that he had been asking God for a sign about a problem when he went for that walk and just by chance ran into me that night. He’s lived down the street from me for 17 years and we had never run into each other before.

    He introduced me to Georgina and that led to my working with her, because I, too, had been looking for answers to a problem.

    How amazing is that?


    Teachers are all around us. Ask God for a sign. Listen and learn and life will get better for you on the road to happy destiny.

    Perhaps this email today is a sign for someone. If any of you are ready to explore the ideas and beliefs you hold about prosperity and abundance, life and money and how changing them might lead you to a richer and happier life, I am here for you.

    How do I know what I know? My qualifications are best outlined by the introduction I wrote to “The Wealthy Spirit”–and they’re not what you might think:

    “Please know that this book comes not from an author who’s always done everything right, or on whom Providence has always smiled. I learned it the hard way, through rock-bottom personal experience. I’ve been a “starving actor,” a battered wife, an alcoholic; I’ve been robbed at gun-point, had my house foreclosed, and filed bankruptcy. I’ve been “Pity Party Patty”—the one who always had a sob story to tell. It took me years to figure out that the victim stories were what kept me a victim.     “And one day, it was and I didn’t.

I’m not Donald Trump, I’m not Bill Gates; I can’t teach you how to make billions. There are other books for that. I’m just a middle-class, middle-aged girl, who once was miserable and broke, and now is living rich, inside and out. I make a six-figure income, am debt-free, have savings and investments, a retirement plan, and travel the world on exciting vacations every year. My recreational beverage of choice is Diet Coke. I have wonderful relationships with family and friends and a spiritual foundation to my life and my work that deepens every day. I’m making more money and having more fun than ever before in my life.

    “Consciously or unconsciously, we create our lives. We create them out of our thoughts, attitudes, beliefs, and feelings and the choices we make from them. Our life story is the sum total of our decisions. We have such power and yet so many people feel powerless. We give up our power to the things we have chosen and then think we are helpless to change it. But we are responsible for it all. We choose where we live, who our friends are, what our work is. We choose whether or not we exercise, smoke, take drugs, donate to charity, get a degree, have pets, have spouses, have children. We pick what we read, what we think, and what we believe. Our lives are testimonials to our choices. Each moment is the point of power. Each moment, we can continue to choose what we have already chosen or we can choose to choose again.

    “Not what you see, but what you think is what you get. Focus on fear, and your fear will make manifest the object of your fear. Focus on love and love will surround you. Worry about the lack and limitation of your finances and you will produce scarcity. Faithfully concentrate on the solutions to financial problems, visualizing the success beyond, and you will produce abundance. Mind your money and mind your life. A life filled with abundance—inside and out—is yours for the taking.

    “There is a road from poverty to prosperity. I know, because I have walked it myself. You know it, too, but perhaps you have forgotten. Let me remind you. The road beckons. Come. I will walk it with you.”

    Success Instructions

    When I started writing this book, I didn’t know anything about the book business. What I did know was that if I was going to have a successful book, I had better find out as much as I could about writing, publishing, marketing, and selling books. Writing a good book wasn’t going to be enough. I had to know how the publishing industry worked, how to write a good book proposal, how to get an agent, how to negotiate a book contract, how to promote and advertise the book, and how to close book sales. I bought books on these subjects, listened to tapes, asked everyone I knew who had contacts in the publishing industry, visualized success, wrote down my goals, practiced my affirmations, meditated, prayed, and sent out ships every day.

    A few months later, I discovered that Mark Victor Hansen and Jack Canfield were giving a seminar called How to Build Your Speaking and Writing Empire in my area. These two men, authors of the Chicken Soup for the Soul book series, had sold more than 50 million books! They were the perfect role models for me. I signed up immediately and drank in every word of the seminar when it was given. It was fabulous! Not only did they present a terrific amount of information, but gave many resources for getting more.

    The day after the workshop, my networking paid off: Through Women’s Referral Service, I met a chiropractor, Jim Blumenthal, who referred me to Theresa Stephens, who put me in touch with her friend Jim Jermanok, who put me in touch with his friend, literary agent Lisa Hagan at Paraview, Inc., who signed me as a client the day she received my manuscript. Lisa found me my wonderful editor and publisher, Deborah Werksman at Sourcebooks. They are all “My People!”

    It’s All About PR

    “After you’ve written your book, found an agent, gotten a publisher, and your book is finally in the bookstores, five percent of your work has been done.”—Jack Canfield

    You learn that, in the book world, PR is everything. When you walk into a bookstore, you are walking into a treasure house of 140,000 books. Online at amazon.com, there are some 3 million books. Somewhere in your mind, dimly, you knew that, but nothing drives it home so much as walking into a bookstore and seeing rack upon rack of beautiful books and then you go find your section and see all the racks of beautiful self-help books and then, tucked into a small shelf on the bottom left, there is your one-and-only, your own beautiful book. Ahhh, you sigh, your book, your dream, has magically materialized and actually exists in a real bookstore in real space in real time. Then your eyes widen, you look around, and you think, “Gadzooks! (or some such expletive) How am I going to get my book noticed?”

    The answer is PR, PR, pr, PR, PR, PR, pr, PR, and more PR. As in public relations, press, advertising, newsletters, ezines, magazine articles, newspaper articles, radio if you’re lucky, television if you’re really lucky, etc., etc., etc. Then you put on your gold tennis shoes and do a book signing, speak at the Lions Club, the Direct Marketing Association, the Church of Religious Science, the Women’s City Club, the Society for Technical Communication, and anyone else who will book you. You go to other people’s book signings and schmooze, give copies of your book to celebrities (Marianne Williamson, Mark Victor Hansen, Martha Beck, and Suze Orman all own of personally autographed copies of “The Wealthy Spirit”). You go to your six or seven regular networking meetings, National Association of Women Business Owners, Women’s Referral Service, Chambers of Commerce, NEW Women Entrepreneurs (it really helps if you like chicken).

    You do all this because, when you have lunch with Michelle Anton, the producer of the Dr. Laura radio show, she tells you how she found out about your book; that she didn’t know that you were on the “Dr. Laura” television show three years ago, that she didn’t get the press release your publisher sent with your book, and she didn’t get your letter that you sent with your book. None of that mattered. What mattered was that a friend of hers told her about the book. And that’s why, when someone asks what marketing strategy has worked the best to promote your book, you say, “The twenty years I’ve been out there networking.”

    Then, because book money comes three months after the end of the six-month royalty period, you make hundreds of gold calls on the gold phone because the NOW money of workshops is in the phone, where the LATER money of books is in the mail. You teach class two nights a week and enroll class every other waking moment. In your spare time, you write an article for Dr. Laura’s web site, you write your next newsletter, and you smile sweetly when people start asking you about your next book…

    And you thank God every day for giving you this rich, full, high-class-quality-problem-too-busy life where you can decide what dream you want, bring a book into being, and e-zoom your thoughts and feelings into the minds and hearts of a circle of friends.

    At many networking meetings, each person is given an opportunity to do a thirty-second commercial on their business. This is called a “round robin.” This is a great chance to advertise the benefits of the products or services you provide to others. It is important that you represent yourself in an interesting way—say or do something that stands out or makes you special. You can’t educate the audience or explain everything you do in thirty seconds—you just have to pique the audience’s interest so that they want to talk to you later.

    Here are some memorable examples from networking meetings I’ve attended:

    “If you’re in debt, don’t fret, call Bret.”–Bret Davis, Bankruptcy Attorney

    “Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall. Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. And who did he immediately call? The law offices of Rhoda Walsh.”—Rhoda Walsh, Personal Injury Attorney

    A woman at the podium drinks a glass of milk, turns to the audience and says, “Got cookies?”–Shell Brown, Shell Brown’s Cookies

    “Give me your checkbook, your bills, your huddled receipts yearning to breathe free….”—Alan Smithee, Bookkeeper

    “Have you heard that all printers charge the same?” Audience response, “It’s a lie!” “That’s right. I can get you the best price in town,” says Sharon Helmer, Printer

    Do you ever have to introduce yourself at a business meetings or events? Make it clever, make it entertaining, make people laugh. It’s not only fun—it’s good business. People like to be entertained. They will remember you. And that’s all marketing was ever about.

    If you are not in business or in sales, open up to the possibility of marketing the company you work for. Their success is your success—if they make more money, they’ll have more money with which to pay your salary. And if you aren’t employed, find a creative tag for whatever you are doing with your time: “I nurture children,” “I’m doing my part to hold down the divorce rate,” “I perfect golf swings.” Whatever you do, don’t put yourself down by saying, “I’m just a _____.” Be proud of who you are and what you do. Or change it.

    I was introduced to networking by my insurance agent, the late Sharlee Bishin. She came by my office one day, when I had only had my bookkeeping business for about a year. We chatted for a bit, and she asked me, “Where are you networking?” I looked at her blankly. “What’s networking?” I asked. Horrified, she said, “Come with me, dear,” and we were off to a dinner meeting of Women’s Referral Service, a wonderfully friendly group of supportive businesswomen (and men) founded by Nancy Sardella.

    It didn’t take me long to figure out that I was doing something wrong. Every person I met asked me what kind of work I did, and I would answer, “I’m a bookkeeper.” The reactions were swift and instantaneous. People frowned, drew back, changed the subject, or left in a hurry. As an actress, I had developed the ability to know when I had my audience’s attention and it was clear I lost it the minute I mentioned the word “bookkeeping.” No one wanted to have a conversation about that.

    Today’s Affirmation: “I am the most unique and beautiful me I know!”

    I still attend WRS meetings – I’ve been a member for 25 years now. They teach people how to network, too, with a “non-sales selling technique”. You’re taught that when you meet someone new, you ask them “What do you do?” and “What kind of clients are you looking for?” This keeps everyone open to hearing from other people instead of trying to pitch everyone they meet on their own business, see? Much more user-friendly. The groups motto is “You can have everything in life you want if you just help enough other people get what they want” which is a quote of Zig Ziglar’s. It’s so true.

    Also, WRS does the most wonderful thing after their 30-second round robins – everyone gets an additional 10 seconds with which to thank someone else in the room for their product or service.


    I was feeling a bit blue last Thursday – I was just a little tired and out of sorts, my email connection went down, and I just took the afternoon off to relax. I had a WRS meeting scheduled and didn’t really feel like getting up, dressed, and drive across town. But I know I’m always glad after I do it, so off I went.

    The meeting completed turned my head around. I always say “when I go to WRS, I greet old friends and make new ones.” The warmth of the people in the room embraced me, and I relaxed into the flow of energy from lovely dolphins.

    Wouldn’t you know, several people gave me testimonials after their round robins – how did they know I needed that? It made me feel so good to know that my work has helped people to grow and prosper and that I was appreciated. Isn’t that just what we all need and want every day?

    Everyone’s in Sales

    “I don’t care how many degrees you have on the wall, if you don’t know how to sell, you’re probably going to starve.”—George Forman

    Some of the stories in this book look like they’re meant just for salespeople and business owners. They aren’t. If you are a salaried employee, someone owns the business you work for and someone is in charge of raising the money to run it. Top salaries and perks are handed out to the people who are best at bringing in the money. Learn how they do it and contribute to the cause. Be one of the people who care about cash flow, cutting expenses, maximum efficiency, and productivity. Look for opportunities to maximize income and minimize expenses. Anyone can do this. Put yourself in your bosses’ shoes and think as they think. What do you think they want most—and how can you give them that? Be one of the profit centers of the business and your success will be assured.

    Everyone is in sales. When you convince your significant other to go with you to the movie you want to see, that’s a sale. When you convince your child to stay in school, that’s a sale. When you convince a friend to stop drinking, that’s a sale.

    I’m reminded of a conversation I had one day with a boyfriend named Bobby. I was trying to convince him to go with me to a movie. Well, Bobby was a salesperson too, and all of a sudden noticed all the sales techniques I was using on him. He said, “Chellie, you are closing all the time and you don’t even know you’re doing it!”

    When I said, “Well, you know you want to see me,” he said, “That’s the Assumptive Close!” I continued, “And we could either go see that romantic comedy or the spy movie” and he said, “That’s the Alternative of Choice Close!” I said, “We would have fun, get to laugh, eat popcorn, have some balance in our lives, and the only down side is taking some time away from work.” “Benjamin Franklin Close!” Bobby hooted. “So what do you think?” I said, and stopped talking. Bobby didn’t say anything either. After a long silence, Bobby said, “Final Close, and The Next One Who Speaks Loses. I guess that’s me.” And so we went to the movies!

    We’re all making sales every day. Use your powers of persuasion to convince others to contribute to your charity, organize political action, improve the schools in your community, or help you turn a hobby into a money-making home business. Help your company to make more money—and then convince the powers that be to give you a raise. The raise will not come automatically—you have to ask for it and show the reasons why you deserve it. It’s a sale.

    You are a marvelous, creative human being and endless opportunities await you. Look for them. Then sell your way into them.

    My friend, consultant and trainer Harriet Cohen, wrote this in her blog “to honor Chellie Campbell in her book The Wealthy Spirit page 204, everyone is in sales:”

    Ok, so if we are all selling, which we are, why are the elevator speeches and introductions we give such a turn off? We want people to buy from us because of our integrity, credibility and product or service benefit yet the 1st thing we say to people can end an interaction or discussion before it even starts.

    I was at a networking event recently and everyone except for me (better do it right if I’m going to teach it. ) said their name 1st and their industry; esthetician, therapist, financial planner, etc. Why is this a problem? Simple it gives the listener the chance to immediately apply their perception about the industry and never hear the benefits the speaker offers.

    Your elevator speech or introduction is simply a hook to get someone’s attention and unless your name is famous and you can play with it, your name or industry means zero to the listener. Your industry is only important if they need that and the chances there are small.

    Tell people a problem, ask a question, or provide a hook to get them to listen to you. I might ask if the listener knows their target market and how to reach them before their competitor does, or if they know the difference between customer service and customer satisfaction and why that is a major factor in their business success. One of my clients teaches people how to like their kids and enjoy family time again. If you think that doesn’t get people to listen guess again!

    Think about how you come across to others and if you aren’t sure ask your friends or ask me. Make sure when you sell you, people know how wonderful what they buy will be!

    Working Is Fun

    A third of your life is spent working, a third is spent sleeping, and the other third is for having fun. If you love your work and your work is also your play, then two thirds of your life will be fun. It is up to you to create your life this way.

    Have you ever listened to interviews with movie stars talking about how much they love their work? Many times they say they can’t believe they get paid to do it, it is so much fun. And they never seem to be looking forward to retirement so they can do what they want. They are doing what they want now. Getting paid for it is a bonus. When was the last time you heard a famous movie star say, “Boy, I can’t wait until I’ve saved enough to retire so I can quit working”?

    Too many people get trapped into working at jobs they hate in order to pay the bills. When I was doing secretarial jobs for rent money while I was trying to develop a career as an actress, I was unfortunate enough to land in a couple of jobs I really despised. I remember waking up in the wee hours of the morning before the alarm clock rang and saying to myself, “Oh, I hope it’s not morning yet. I don’t want to have to get up and go back to that terrible job.” It’s impossible to live a happy, healthy, or productive life from that frame of mind. And you certainly won’t create prosperity there. I attended a lecture given by Deepak Chopra, who told us of studies that were done with people who had heart attacks before age forty. They were looking for common denominators. They found only one: They all hated their jobs. It was chilling that most of the heart attacks took place on a Monday, and most of them happened around nine o’clock.

    Lawrence Boldt wrote a wonderful book entitled Zen and the Art of Making a Living in which he talks about how true fulfillment in life comes from finding your right work. Instead of trying to fit yourself into a box that someone else has constructed, he suggests creating your own special, individual box and filling it with your life’s work. If it’s fun for you, it’s right for you. What are you good at? Once you know what your talent is, look for people who need that and are willing to pay to have it. That’s how you create your own path of employment, whether you’re working on your own as an entrepreneur or working as an employee at a company.

    Don’t like your job? Well, who picked it? Here is your key. Unlock your shackles. Move!

    Today’s Affirmation: “My work is my play and I am paid to play!”

    One of the parts of my business that is the most fun is the once-a-month meeting of my Money Mastery Network group. Composed of graduates from my 8-week Financial Stress Reduction® Workshop, they gather at my house and we brainstorm creative ideas for each other, cheer loudly for each other’s successes, and help each other through the problems that get in our way sometimes. It warms my heart when one of them says they waited two years to get into the group (I only take 12 and there’s a waiting list) and another says, “When Chellie called and said, ‘There’s a space for you if you want it’ I turned my car around immediately and said, ‘I’m on my way!’”

    Don’t we all love to be loved? Ahhhhh….


    It’s more difficult reaching out to people who haven’t heard of you, don’t know you, don’t trust or believe you can help them yet, raise all the objections of time and money and family obligations and they’ve got to remodel their house first and they’ll take your course and learn to make money and have fun later. Sigh.

    But that’s the work all of us face, isn’t it? We want to help others and they need our help, but they need convincing. They need you to guide them to their highest good but they aren’t buying until you guide them to invest in the process – spiritually, physically, emotionally, and financially. I teach people how to master their money, and what’s the first obstacle we encounter? Money. It’s too funny, really.

    “Many are called but few are chosen.” Meaning in this instance that many people have financial issues they want to solve, but only a few will put their time, money, and energy into the work it takes to solve it.

    I’m looking for those dolphins-in-training who might be a little bit tuna at the moment, but have a vision of a delicious, rich, future and want to start creating it NOW!
