    I Guess I’m Just Lucky

    Oops! My car broke again. Well, machinery gets old and stuff happens. This time I was in a parking garage behind a restaurant in Culver City. It was 10:00 P.M. and I was one of the last people leaving a networking dinner. The key wouldn’t turn in the ignition and the steering column was locked. The parking lot attendant came over and tried to get it to work too, but no go. Rats.

    Okay, time to play “The Glad Game”: Thank you, God, for the Auto Club. Thank you, God, for cell phones. I made some notes for my book and did some affirmations while I waited for the tow truck. Finally, my knight in shining armor arrived in the person of Bijan, astride his trusty steed, the Auto Club tow truck. He strapped my car to his truck, I got in the cab, and we took off for the repair shop.

    “You know, there are some good things about this,” Bijan said to me as we drove away. I looked at him in astonishment. The tow trucker from Iran was playing “The Glad Game”! He continued, “If your wheels hadn’t been straight, I wouldn’t have been able to tow you.”

    “Really?” I commented. “I guess I’m just lucky!”

    My friend and fellow author, Mariaemma Willis, gave me a great leg up when I was first writing The Wealthy Spirit.  She was in my Financial Stress Reduction Workshop, and one class she brought in a flyer advertising Mark Victor Hansen and jack Canfield’s “How to Buld Your Speaking and Writing Empire” weekend seminar and shared it with the class.

    “I want to go to that!” I exclaimed, and made a copy of the flyer, called them the next day, and enrolled. Mariaemma went too and we both had a fabulous time and learned a lot, and nurtured and supported each other over the next several years as we wrote and then published our books.

    Mariaemma is an expert at education and particularly children’s learning sytles, the subject of her book. She recently posted this excellent piece on Facebook and she gave me permission to reproduce it here:

    Last week, at one of my networking group meetings, we discussed Gay Hendricks’ book, The Big Leap, and his concept of the Zone of Genius. Our hostess focused on the idea that if we stayed in our Zone of Genius pretty much the whole day, that would bring us the most fulfillment and success, in our careers and our lives. We then did some exercises to re-discover and identify where our genius lies.

    And here is what’s so sad, I said to the group, when it was my turn. Here we are trying to resurrect our genius and encouraged to spend lots of time in that zone; yet for 12 or more years kids are prevented from doing this very thing, especially in school.

    What, you want to draw all day? No drawing until you learn your math facts. Do experiments all day? I don’t think so -  you’ve got English and Geography and Economics…Spend most of your time reading…or working with animals…or learning about aviation…you get the idea – it just can’t be done.

    School is set up to give you a well-rounded education and you must spend lots of time on these other topics, whether they are relevant to your real life or not. And then, years later, therapists and life coaches and career counselors ask, So what do you love? Why aren’t you doing that? What makes you the happiest? Geesh, why not encourage kids to do that in the first place – discover where your genius is and you will be happy and successful!

    $10,000 on a Day Off

    Jerry Warner is a stock trader. A mortgage broker for many years, he has a knack for valuing stocks and companies, and started trading options on a regular basis. Bright, energetic and optimistic, he started a new business so he could share his ability with others. He re-enrolled in my workshop in order to collect new ideas and impetus for his new venture.

    Just after completing the course, the stock market went through one of its volatile phases. Stocks values jumped wildly—up one minute and down the next. Jerry started getting nervous. His stocks were plummeting. Should he sell and mitigate his losses? Or should he hold on for a rally? He called to tell me what he did next.

    “I just thought to myself, ‘What would Chellie do?’” he told me on the phone. He decided that the companies he had invested in maintained real value and that the market gyrations were only a momentary glitch. He remembered a saying had heard me repeat, “Never make a permanent decision while in a temporary state of mind,” so rather than watch the ticker tape and worry about the ups and downs all day, he decided to take a “Do Nothing Day” or “Pajama Day.” He took the rest of the day off, went home, got in his pajamas, relaxed, and read books.

    “So what happened to your stocks?” I asked.

    “Well,” he said, “my initial instinct had been to respond out of fear, cut my losses, and sell everything. But I remembered you telling us not to make fear-based decisions. I forced myself to remain calm and relaxed. By the end of the day, the market went back up.

    “I made an additional profit of $10,000—because I took a day off! Isn’t that a great story?”

    Yes, Jerry, it is.

    Playing the stock market game takes nerves of steel. You have to develop poker skills—to know when to hold them and when to fold them. If you’re going to get scared and sell out whenever the market goes down from time to time, you are not going to win at this game. You have to have a plan, sometimes revise the plan, mostly stick to the plan, and get the advice of a planner. It’s an adventure. It’s a gamble. Enjoy the ride—or don’t play.

    Today’s Affirmation: “I buy low and I sell high!”

    What looks like good news isn’t always good news, and what looks like bad news isn’t always bad news.

    On Monday, I dropped my cell phone for the final time. I tried putting it back together, but when it lit up it just said “Error in app 205”.

    I had no idea what that meant, but I took myself down to the Verizon store to see what it would take to fix it. I thought I might take a look at all the new smart phones while I was there, and see if an upgrade was in order.

    Mike, the nice young professional telecomm guy took me right in hand. “What can I do to help you today?” he inquired.

    I explained the problem and asked what “Error in app 205” meant. He checked with his computer, looked up and smiled. “Do you want the bad news first or the good news?

    “Give me the bad news,” I said. Make me sad then make me happy again seems to be the right order of things to me.

    “’Error in app 205’ means ‘I am dead’, he explained. “This phone is a goner and can’t be resurrected.”

    “Oh, dear,” I said, “I suspected as much. What’s the good news?”

    “The good news is we have a fabulous new upgraded Blackberry for you and it’s hardly going to cost you anything,” he beamed. And he was right. The Blackberry Bold is terrific, and he gave me a bunch of extra goodies with it along with a rebate etc. so it’s only costing me about $50.

    I called my trusty computer expert, Marc Chroman (www.nutsandbytes.com) to come over and set it all up for me (far better than working my way through the manual myself, and much faster, too). Now I have a camera, video, direct connection to Facebook and Twitter, a cute black and white plaid case…I’m a happy camper!

    So what looked like bad news was really good news in disguise. I had been thinking a lot about upgrading my cell phone, so I guess the Universe just had to give me a more forceful nudge in that direction.

    Do Nothing Day

    After I had the revelation about my habit of getting sick in order to get out of commitments, I decided I had to change my behavior. I had to learn to say “No” to more things and break the cycle of over-commitment. I had to focus on my priorities, and one of them had to be my health.

    I took a long, hard look at my calendar and all the activities I planned each week. I realized I was on the go too much—even with fun things. I needed more “do nothing time.” I looked at what I did on my sick days: I stayed in my pajamas, wrapped myself in a blanket, I watched TV, I read books, I napped throughout the day, I talked with friends on the phone, I ate foods that made me feel better, I drank hot tea and soup. I wondered what it would be like to have a “sick day” when I wasn’t sick? So I created “Do Nothing Day.”

    On “Do Nothing Day,” I eat my favorite foods and watch videos of recent movies I really want to see. I always have several books I’m in the middle of, so I’ll read them when the mood strikes me. I might play computer games, chat on the Internet, do crossword puzzles. I sit on the patio and watch the birds. I often stay in my pajamas, or at least wear comfortable scruffy clothes. I don’t go anywhere. I don’t put on any makeup. I don’t answer the phone (it might be work related, and I’d rather not explain about “Do Nothing Day” on “Do Nothing Day.”) I drink my tea and cuddle with my cat. There is a great pleasure in lying on a bed, holding a cat with its motor running, knowing you don’t have to get up anytime soon and rush off.

    After a “Do Nothing Day,” I am a bundle of energy and enthusiasm: Renewed, refreshed and once again eager to connect with the world and do the work I love.

    When was the last time you took a day off just to loaf around? Put one on your schedule now.

    P.S. “Do Nothing Day” is not “Chores Day.” You do not have permission to do anything constructive.

    Today’s Affirmation: “I revel in relaxation!”

    I realized that when I was a kid, I was never excused from school unless I was sick. There were no “mental health” days, or playing hookey at our house. My parents were very serious about education and following the rules and doing what was expected of us. Staying home from school just for fun would have been bad.

    But when I was sick, my mom would pamper us silly. She’d fix us milk toast or cream of wheat for breakfast and chicken soup for lunch. We got to lie on the couch and watch television (all 7 channels) or read books. Mom would plump our pillows and hourly ask how we were feeling. It was rather a “Queen for a Day” experience.

    No wonder I always worked hard and didn’t give myself many breaks – except if I were sick. It was just a mirror of my early training which had sunk into my brain as an oft-repeated pattern without my realizing it.

    Now I have incorporated “Do Nothing” days into my regular schedule. Ahhhhh. Each one feels just as wonderful, relaxing, and a little bit decadent as that first one did. It’s become my new habit. Enjoying myself – now that’s a habit pattern I want.

    It Pays to Be on Time

    When I attended a financial workshop years ago, we played a game called “It pays to be on time.” We were charged a dollar a minute for every minute we were late to class, to a maximum of ten dollars. You should have heard the arguments that went on each class about paying those fines! A veritable cornucopia of “Yeah, buts.” “Yeah, but there was an accident on the freeway,” “Yeah, but my car broke down,” “Yeah, but my biggest client called with a problem and I had to help him,” etc. The workshop cost eight hundred dollars, yet here we were spending the first fifteen-twenty minutes of each class arguing whether or not someone owed their fine of two dollars!

    There was an important lesson in this exercise. When you’re late, you’re late. Just own your responsibility that you made a choice that resulted in your being late. Whether it was to leave for the meeting with no leeway for traffic problems, to choose to pick up the ringing telephone when you were on your way out, or not having your car properly serviced so breakdowns don’t occur—these are all choices that are your responsibility. If your ship sails and you’re not on it, the reasons why you missed it won’t put you on it.

    Today’s Affirmation: “Time is my friend and I am always on time.”

    Isn’t it funny how the Late People are always late nearly exactly the same amount of time? I remember one of my mother’s friends was always one hour late. For everything. She would arrive flustered and hurried and very apologetic. But you could set your watch by the exactly one hour she would be late! So of course, my mom started telling her things started an hour earlier so that they would be on time.

    I err on the other side of the spectrum. I’m habitually early for everything. I know it’s partly because I don’t want to miss anything, but more than that, it’s my theater training. The curtain goes up at 8:00, the audience is in their seats and waiting and they’ve paid for their tickets and expect the show to start on time. All the actors have to be ready, in costume and makeup, and start the show.

    I’ll never forget when I was performing in a production of “Little Mary Sunshine” at the Megaw Theater in Northridge. The director was Elaine Moe, and she was fabulously talented. And a strict taskmistress. She expected everyone to be promptly on time for every rehearsal. She gave us the rules in the beginning:

    “You will be on time for every rehearsal. If you aren’t here on time, everyone in the cast will sit and do nothing but wait for you to arrive. When you do, you will go onstage and make a formal apology to everyone in the theater whose time you wasted.”

    Brrrrr! I’m telling you, one person was late early on, and the rest of us sat and waited for her to arrive. When she did and saw everyone just sitting and staring at her, she gulped and turned white. She nervously made her stuttering apology, as Elaine and the rest of us stared at her.

    I don’t remember anyone ever being late again.

    I was so religiously on time that people always expected it of me. Once I was meeting my mother, my aunt Woodie, and my sisters for lunch at the Beverly Wilshire tea room, and somehow I ran late (traffic? I don’t remember). But I remember the looks of relief from all my family members when I rushed in 15 minutes after the appointed hour.

    “Oh, thank God you’re here,” my mother breathed with a deep sigh of relief. “We were sure something terrible had happened to you because you’re never late!”

    Cruise Day

    Going on a cruise is a wonderful experience—it’s a big adult playpen on the water. When I took my first cruise with Korey, we couldn’t believe how much fun there was to be had with the wide variety of activities. There was a casino, bingo games, nightly entertainment, karaoke, dancing, a piano bar, aerobics classes, a gym, massage, shuffle-board, skeet shooting and food galore. You only have to unpack one time and the ship carries you to different ports of call—you wake up and you’re in another city. We had a fabulous time.

    When we got home from the cruise, Korey and I decided that we didn’t want the fun we had had to end. So we invented “Cruise Day.” Once a month, we planned a day off. It had to be a work day so we could feel like we were playing hooky and getting away with something. For that whole day, we did nothing but have fun, just like when we were on our cruise.

    We always checked with each other ahead of time to see if it was a High Budget, Medium Budget or Low Budget Cruise Day. High Budget Cruise Days looked like this: We went to Nordstroms and shopped for great clothes, we went to the theater, we had steak and lobster at a great restaurant, etc. On Medium Budget Cruise Days, we did more window-shopping and less actual purchasing, we went to the movies and ate at a medium-priced restaurant. During Low Budget times, we rented videos and popped popcorn, picnicked on the beach, or visited a local museum.

    I have to tell you we had every bit as much fun on Low Budget Cruise Days as High Budget ones. You can laugh and talk and have a great time with a great friend no matter what the contents of your wallet are. So plan a Cruise Day today!

    Today’s Affirmation: “I think, therefore I’m rich!”

    My lovely niece Marissa, married to her wonderful husband Maxie, has two adorable children, Kara and Maxie, and they are expecting their third child (Derek) in June. Since the increase in family members means and increase in budget expenditures, she was contemplating how to tweak things and get another assignment for product placement in a movie. (She got copies of her aunties’ The Wealthy Spirit into the book store scene in the movie “Easy A”. I loved that!)

    Last Friday morning, she sent me this report:

    Hi Auntie Chellie!

    So I have a funny story you will appreciate.  Maybe 2 months ago when the reality of baby #3 hit me, I was sitting in the living room thinking to myself, “It would be nice to get offered to work on just one more movie so maybe we can pay off the mini van and put some money away before baby #3 arrives.”  Not 30 minutes later, my boss called me and offered me a gig, to help work on a movie doing just Props and Sets while they handled the marketing side, yet getting paid my full asking price.  Wow!

    Now, when you submit your invoice for working on a film, you NEVER KNOW WHEN that invoice will get paid, especially when asking for the money up front. They could wait until filming begins, when it wraps, or somewhere in the middle.

    So yesterday, it had been 23 days since I had submitted my invoice, and I was daydreaming about paying off the minivan so we wouldn’t have car payments anymore, so while Maxie was at preschool, Kara and I gave the minivan an overhaul, removing every piece of kids clothing, every granola bar wrapper, every crayon…took the stickers from In N Out off of Kara’s window, wiped down the inside, and vacuumed every last corner because this car was about to be OURS.

    And then I got the check in the mail a few hours later.

    Your Financial Thermostat

    Have you ever felt that, no matter what you did, you couldn’t rise above a certain amount of spendable income? That those extra fun frills in life you long for are always just out of reach, even when you get the raise, or the insurance settlement, or the inheritance? Like a broken thermostat, the financial setting has gotten stuck on an amount of money that you subconsciously believe is the best you can allow yourself. You’re stuck at just enough to get by, just as the thermostat is stuck at sixty degrees. You want to be warmer, and seventy-two degrees sounds great, but the thermostat won’t budge. That’s what keeps us at “getting by money” instead of “above and beyond money.”

    I began to notice this as a trend in my own life and it was mirrored by the experiences of my clients, as well. It became clear one day when I got home from a speaking engagement for which I was paid $1,000. As I drove home from the event, with my bright, crisp check for $1,000 of extra money—unplanned for and unbudgeted—I thought about all the things I could do with this windfall. I hummed happily to myself as I walked in my apartment and got myself a soft drink from the refrigerator.

    I plopped myself down on the couch, reached for the remote and turned on the television set—which promptly blew up. Well, it didn’t exactly blow up; it made a loud popping noise and went blank. A puff of smoke came out the back of it. My dreams of new purchases went out the window with that puff of smoke. I now knew what I was going to be buying with my check—a replacement TV.

    Disappointed as I was, I had to laugh. I knew exactly what had happened. My money had exceeded my financial thermostat setting, so I created something to have to use the money for that would basically keep me even instead of being ahead. Has this ever happened to you? You get the raise—and the school your kids are in raises its tuition. Or you get the inheritance and then the car breaks down and you have to spend the money to fix it. You get a gift of money, but you find out you owe more taxes than you originally thought. When these things happen, you need to raise your money consciousness.

    To raise your net worth you have to raise your self-worth. You need to look at your opinions or beliefs about money that limit you and change them. Think of yourself as rich and abundant, with plenty to have and to give. Feel good about the receiving of abundance as well as the giving, for they are two sides of the same coin. Thank God for the gift and pass it on. Light the fire, raise the thermostat, increase the heat! And more money will come to warm itself in your glow.

    Today’s Affirmation: “Every day, I’m burning brighter and growing richer!”

    One way to raise your money consciousness is to raise your prices. Aren’t you worth more now, really?

    If they want what you have, they’ll pay anything to get it. If they don’t want what you have, free isn’t cheap enough.

    It’s always very interesting when the topic of pricing arises with the participants in my Financial Stress Reduction® Workshops.  People have many issues surrounding charging money for their products and services. The most usual one is that they don’t charge what they really want to charge – they’re afraid to price themselves too high and lose a sale. Especially now during the “Great Recession!” Don’t we have to slash our prices, have a big sale, help our clients with payment plans?

    The answer is “sometimes”. But if you slash your prices so much that you lose money on every sale, how is that going to help you?

    Joe was a very polished, profession attorney who specialized in financial fraud issues (he must be really busy right now!) and worked on a contingency basis. He was struggling with his budgeting because he would work on a case for as long as two years before the case was decided and he got paid.

    “Do you get a retainer up front to help with costs?” I asked.

    “Yes, he said, “but it’s only $1,000 and that doesn’t last very long.”

    “So, why don’t you ask for $5,000?” I replied.

    He started to answer and then stopped himself. He smiled and said, “Well, I guess I’ve been afraid that if I ask for too much, they’ll leave and go somewhere else.”

    “If they can’t pay you what you need to live, they should go,” I answered. “You need to at least ask for what you want – you can always negotiate a bit if you need to. Why not try it?”

    “You’re right,” he said, “I have three prospective client meetings this week and I’ll try asking them for $5,000 and see what happens.

    He left with that idea in mind, and I looked forward to seeing him at the next class session.

    The following week, he was the first one to report his progress: “You remember I had three meetings with prospective clients last week?  I asked each one of them for a $5,000 retainer. And you know what? Each one of them wrote out a check for that amount with no questions asked! And now I have $15,000 in the bank!”

    So what are you charging? What would you like to charge?

    The Balance Sheet

    The Balance Sheet. This is one of those important financial statements that bankers and accountants love. We need to love it too, because it is a snapshot of how we are doing financially at any one moment in time. It is basically just a list of the value of all the things you own, balanced against the money you owe to other people. This is its basic construction:

    Assets (All the stuff you own)

    Cash in bank accounts

    Other cash

    Stocks and bonds

    Real estate

    Automobile

    Furniture

    Art, Jewelry, etc.

    Total $______

    Liabilities (All the stuff you owe)

    Credit card debt

    Real estate mortgages

    Car loan

    Loans from family, friends, etc.

    Total $______

    Net Worth (Not as a human being, just financially)         Total $______

    Today’s Affirmation: “I accumulate assets that put more money in my pocket every day!”

    When I have people in my classes start adding up their net worth, the tension rises appreciably.

    “This isn’t reducing my financial stress!” they grumble.

    “Not today, maybe,” I tell them, “but by the time you finish this class you’re going to be happy you’re doing this exercise. You’ll love counting your money when you have more money to count!”

    Many people just never even get started on the road to financial health because they dread taking a realistic look at where they are now. But until you’re willing to look at the sum total of what you’ve been up to, you’re not going to know where you’re at. And really, hiding out from the truth just puts you under so much tension and stress. You’re always afraid that you’re seriously in trouble with the money game, and that’s going to affect everything in your life negatively.

    Count it up! What if you’re better off than you thought and you’ve been spending all this energy and sleepless nights worrying and fretting for nothing?

    I’ve had people come back to class after doing their balance sheet exclaiming that they had no idea they were doing so well – that their net worth was a lot higher than they expected. I’ve had people say their worst suspicions were confirmed.

    It doesn’t matter what the number is today. It’s going to change for the better now, because you’re taking charge of it. You’re going to make new and better decisions about your money, because you’re working on it. I know you are because you’re reading this blog. Good job, everyone! Celebrate your richer future!

    “Getting By” Money vs. “Above and Beyond” Money

    Many people get caught in the trap of making just enough money to “get by.” They work to pay their current bills, and once those are satisfied, they relax and coast until the first of the next month, when they start the process all over again. It is a basic money habit pattern. Working frantically to get the bills paid and then coasting will not get you to the pinnacle of success you deserve. No one ever coasted uphill.

    A smart and savvy entrepreneur, Yvonne came to my workshop several years ago. She was in the executive search business and made a nice income working out of her home. When I spoke about the habit pattern of working just to get by, she related to it instantly. She said that she would work diligently trying to place executives with her client companies, but when she made a few placements that would pay all her bills, she literally stopped working. I asked her what would happen if she kept going, and she responded that she didn’t know. I said, “Well, try it this week and see what happens.” and she agreed.

    She glowed when she walked in the classroom the next week. Beaming happily, she talked of how she made a placement that would pay all her bills, but then just kept going. She used the “Ships Log” to keep track of her activities and keep her motivated. Instead of stopping at her “break-even” point, she made $35,000 that week. This was definitely “Above and Beyond” money!

    She was so happy, she wrote me a commission check. She had purchased my course at a charity auction to which I had donated it, so I hadn’t been paid for her attendance. With that big win in her pocket, she wanted me to make money, too. As I accepted the check (“People love to give me money!”), I told the class I knew that she knew what goes around comes around. I expected that gift was going to produce even more money in her life.

    Just a few years later, she had six branch offices across the country.

    What could you have if you just kept going?

    Today’s Affirmation: “I always receive an abundance of ‘Above and Beyond’ money!”

    During one of my workshops, one of my participants also had an 8-week workshop business,  helping people with relationships. She was unhappy with her income and wanted more money.

    “How much are you charging?” I quizzed her.

    “$400,” she replied.

    “How much would you like to charge?” I asked.

    “Well…$800”, she said hesitantly.

    “So this week ask for $800 and see what happens,” I suggested.

    She did, they paid – and she couldn’t believe it was that easy. She enrolled 4 people that week at the new price. Another happy client’s financial stress was reduced. I love when that happens!

    Soon after that, another workshop leader told me she was unhappy with my class because she still wasn’t making enough money even though she had successfully enrolled ten people in her latest 6-week workshop.

    “How much are you charging?” I asked. (Is this sounding familiar?)

    “$125,” she answered.

    “Is that enough money for you to live on?” I asked.

    “No,” she replied, “That’s the problem!”

    “Well, who picked that number?” I said.

    She looked at me for a long moment, then said, “I guess I did.”

    “Then pick a better number and your problems will be solved!” I said.

    Every business owner needs to pick two important numbers in their business:

    1.      How many people do you want to serve each month?

    2.      How much money do you plan to charge them?

    Multiply these two numbers and see if it gives you enough money to pay your bills comfortably, save for the future, pay off your debts, buy a house, go on vacation, and live the life you desire.

    If not, pick another number!

    The Black Limo vs. the Volkswagen

    Annie, my artist friend, had found the Black Limo and gotten in. She was selling paintings to people, even selling a series of paintings to a company for their corporate offices. She arranged for a one-woman show of her work to be scheduled at an art gallery, and had interest from other galleries as well. She was an artist on the move!

    I hadn’t seen her in a few months, when I called to chat. She was in the middle of a big painting project. But not painting her art. No, painting her house. Big house, big project. Very distracting. Very off-purpose for her goals, dreams, and desires. “What was she doing?” I wondered. She had gotten out of the Black Limo. Then she told me she was thinking she should go back to school and get a degree in art. Nope, she hadn’t gotten out of the Black Limo. She was about to crash the Black Limo and get in a rusty ’74 Volkswagen instead.

    I asked how long it would take to get her degree. “Four or five years,” she told me. “And then what?” I asked. There was an uncomfortable pause on the other end of the phone. I asked if any of the art galleries or corporations or buyers had asked to see her art degree before they bought her paintings? Annie groaned and then giggled on the other end of the phone. “You think I’m just going back to school to play it safe and not have to be sending out ships and selling my art, don’t you?” she accused. “I don’t know, what do you think?” “I think I’m busted,” she sighed. The Black Limo was safe. We left the Volkswagen burning by the side of the road.

    Of course, education is extremely valuable, and sometimes it’s a requirement. If you want to be a doctor, or an attorney, or a dentist, you have to go to school and get a degree to get your license. So do that. It’s necessary. And if you’re smart, you will never stop learning. Just don’t use it as an excuse to stop doing.

    The last time I looked, you didn’t have to have a license to be an artist.

    Today’s Affirmation: “I love what I do and that love brings me all the money I want.”

    People tend to make too much out of credentials. It’s all very well to get go to school, get a degree, and set up a professional practice. It means that you have accomplished a certain amount of study and discipline, and that’s great.

    But there are a great many career paths that don’t depend on having a credential. Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Walt Disney, and Steven Spielberg, for example. They were born to talents, skills, and creativity and went off on their own without getting a college degree or any certification. They just went to work and started doing it.

    Once at a networking meeting I attended, each person took their turn giving their 30-second commercial about their business. All three of the people who gave their presentations right before me put emphasis on their credentials and certifications – one had a Masters Degree in Business, one had an MFCC, one had a Ph.D.

    Then it was my turn. “I acknowledge these wonderful people who have such distinguished degrees,” I began, then turned to the audience and smiled. “I on the other hand, have no credentials whatsoever. I’m a graduate of MSU – make stuff up. I’m a Financial Stress Reducer and I certified myself!”

    Back in the day before the proliferation of colleges and universities that everyone could attend, most people learned a trade or profession by becoming an apprentice to a master craftsman or tradesperson. You worked your way up to journeyman and then became a master yourself. We tend to forget that there’s more than one way to become proficient at something.

    In the 21 years I’ve been teaching my workshop, I’ve only been asked for my credentials one time. A woman had already signed up for my class when a friend asked her what my credentials were. “I don’t know!” she exclaimed, and called me to find out.

    I laughed. “Well, I have a BA in Dramatic Art, and belong to the Screen Actors Guild and Actors Equity, which qualifies me as a workshop leader,” I told her, “and I owned a business management firm with thirteen employees for twelve years, which gave me a lot of experience with helping people manage their finances.     In the end, it’s the results that count. When you buy a painting, do you care what degrees the artist had? No. You just care that you think the painting is so beautiful that you want to own it and hang it in your house.

    The Saga of the Pants

    This tale comes from Corinne and Dave Pleger, who participate in Civil War reenactments with authentic costumes, sets, and props. It is a great lesson in how commitment and intention will take you through breakdowns into breakthrough:

    “Over a year ago, Corinne took a class that taught her how to sew an authentic pair of Civil War Federal Army pants. Corinne sewed a pair for me that immediately became the envy of my unit. One man, Ron, admired my pants and asked Corinne to make a pair for him. Normally, Corinne refuses to make clothes for other than family members, but since Ron had made me a period ammunition box, she agreed. By lucky coincidence, Ron is exactly my size, so all Corinne had to do was to duplicate the job she did on mine. Her self-imposed deadline was the annual Civil War Christmas party on December 12th.

    “It took awhile for Corinne to get started because she hadn’t kept any notes from when she made my pair, but eventually she went at it. Night after night she worked industriously on the pants until they were nearly done. But when she brought them downstairs for me to try on, they didn’t fit. The waist measured 38 inches instead of 41 inches. No amount of inhaling and pulling would make these pants fit. There was nothing to do but make a second pair.

    “Newly ordered material arrived on December 4th and all through the weekend she slaved over the pants. She had them nearly finished on December 6th and measured the waist—39 inches. Corinne was upset. To be more precise, it was not a good evening to be near her. Corinne called me at work the next morning and said that she had calmed down and had ordered more material, determined not to be defeated.

    “The material arrived on December 8th and was generously cut that night. A driven woman sewed late into the night on the 10th, so determined to make progress that she let everything else fall unattended by the wayside. On the night before the party, Corinne continued to sew. In some mysterious way, when Corinne completed the fly, it was on the wrong side of the pants. Perhaps this project was jinxed.

    “Corinne resolved to finish the hem on Ron’s pants while I drove us to the Christmas party. I drove very carefully so as to avoid having the car wrecked by the curse of the blue pants. Just as she finished, the light on her portable reading lamp burnt out. But this is a story of triumph! Ron loved his pants and two other guys immediately bought Corinne’s other pairs.”

    Although Corinne has renewed her vow not to sew for people outside of the family, she learned that she has the determination, stick-to-it-ness, and confidence in her own abilities to see a project through despite any obstacles that threaten to bar the way. No matter what you’re facing, keep your eye on the prize and keep going.

    Today’s Affirmation: “I am committed to achieving my goals.”

    Tonight’s emergency is tomorrow’s blog is my message for today. Here’s what happened last night:

    “I think my car’s been stolen!” my roommate’s plaintive voice on the phone exclaimed. She had called me five minutes earlier as she was leaving work, and said she would pick me up for dinner. Now she couldn’t find her car.

    “I’m on my way,” I said, and grabbed my coat, purse and keys on the way out the door. I was concerned she was left standing alone outside on a dark street, but I was only 15 minutes away, and I drive fast :)

    I spotted her immediately, cell phone in hand, talking to the police department. When she got in my car, she finished the call and said her car had been towed. I drove past where she had parked, and there, in big bold red letters, was a “No Stopping” sign listing hours 7 – 9 am and 4 – 6 pm. It was right above the green sign that said 2 hour parking, but she hadn’t noticed it.

    “Well, Missy, you were a bad girl,” I admonished her. She hung her head sheepishly. “And those towing charges are expensive you know!”

    She brightened at that. “It’s okay,” she said smiling, “I have a credit card.” And off we went to dinner.

    A client of mine once told me her father used to say, “If money can solve it, it isn’t a problem.”

    True. Would that all problems were so easily resolved.
